Here’s my thought process for Ginger Cat Appreciation Day.

1. I should take a photo of my ginger cat. The rescue called him ā€œbuff,ā€ but I think that’s ginger, right?
2. What props do I have handy? Vintage camera.
3. How do I get the camera up to Mr. Butter’s face? Books.
4. Vintage books would look cool, but I don’t have enough of them. How about cookbooks?
5. Proceed to rip the slipcovers off cookbooks so they look more neutral and don’t detract from my cat’s cute face.
6. Set up books and camera in my tiny, dark hallway. Add flash off to the side.
7. Take photos of Mr. Butter but don’t edit them until Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is almost over.

We interrupt back-to-school photos with photos of a bald cat wearing a vest in a garden.

Levi’s Adventure Cat photo shoot took us somewhere a little more interesting than his living room. Because he’s been traveling and exploring with his person since he was a kitten, we were able to photograph him in this beautiful garden. Even when the sprinklers came on and the ground got wet, Levi kept right on exploring.

Colorado isn't just mountains. Alpine lakes and their reflections can add another dimension to a photograph.

The last photo is the behind-the-scenes version. Marcella got to explore, I got the shot, and no curious puppies ended up in the lake.

Can you believe I talked someone into waking up at the crack of dawn for a sunrise photoshoot with her four-month-old poodle puppy? The lake was smooth as glass, the trails were empty, and the mountains were glowing in the early morning light.

To make it easy, Dan and I picked them up and drove up to the trailhead (He grew up in Denver, mountain roads don't faze him). Everyone was back home by mid-morning, just in time for a puppy nap. My client says it was worth the early alarm.

Those purple flowers are fireweed, blooming along the trail. Not the prettiest name for a beautiful wildflower.

And yes, Marcella the puppy was safely on a harness and leash the whole time. I removed them in editing.

If you're interested in a sunrise session, there's still time this summer. Prefer to sleep in? We can always do sunset instead!

I wish I could clone Angie. She was born to be in front of the camera.

This 10-year-old dog is the whole package: beautiful, sweet, and adventurous.

Years ago, I could barely get out of bed in time to make it to my desk job by 9 a.m. (If you were one of my co-workers back then, feel free to use the laughing emoji.)

Now, when I have a photo shoot in a beautiful location, I can happily get up before sunrise because this is what my "office" looks like.

If you’re a morning person, you know how much cooler and quieter everything is at that time of day. The dogs appreciate it too, especially in the summer. I have to admit, I’ve been converted. For the right dog and the right backdrop, I will gladly set my alarm early!
