So, what’s the difference between “compact travel camera” and “small travel camera”? The size. It used to include capability but that is not so true anymore. A compact camera, by original definition, was smaller than a regular camera and had a fixed lens that could not be removed. Most all had small, ½” to 1”, sensors. View finders may or may not be present. Display LCDs were usually stationary on the back of the camera. There main use – informally capturing family and events. Size made them easy to carry and have with you.
Now, with smartphone camera advances, the older definitions don’t hold true and are being improved daily. Larger sensors, image stabilization and electronic view finder have challenged the smartphone camera and brought the compact camera back from near extinction.
