This photo was taken taken on Feb. 18, 1966, showed King in a West Side pool hall shooting a game with the late Al Raby, his co-chair of the Chicago Freedom Movement. The event made the front pages of all the local newspapers, TV news, the networks and wire services, plus a big piece in Time Magazine. ๐
Although King was welcomed, admired โ even idolized โ in African American communities, reports from organizers that in some black areas questions were raised about a โsanctified southern preacher,โ or variations thereof, coming to reform Chicago.๐ฑ
They thought it would be helpful to โhumanizeโ King, make him more of a โstreetโ guy. ๐ฑ
They asked the good reverend if he ever shot pool and โ โผ๏ธโ the reverend replied that he loved the game, having honed his skills during college days.๐ฑ
