Adventure Elopement Photographers, Videographers and Planners

What is an elopement ceremony? The way Knots in the Pines plans it, you and your partner (and your guests, if you have any) will meet us at a trailhead or view point and off we’ll go! Most elopements involve hiking, but if you’d rather pursue a different adventure (e.g. river running, shoe shoeing, 4x4, etc), let us know and we can modify things for you.
We can go as far as you’d like, so you may want to go on a 20-mile backpacking trip, hit several short trails, or visit all the viewpoints in your favorite park by car. Either way, as we adventure, you’ll enjoy wildlife watching (Joe and I are especially adept at finding critters and decent at identifying them), the views, and probably some whiskey and snacks. The whole time, Joe and I will be taking candid photos, and we may stop on occasion to get some photos of the two of you in scenic places. We’ll also take photos of the scenery and details (e.g. your rings, flowers, etc).

Sharing Secrets.

One of my favorite things about being an elopement and adventure photographer is getting to share my favorite things with couples. Taking couples to secret spots and sharing history trivia about a location, indigenous flowers, and pointing out bizarre bird calls and dolphins on the horizon are a huge part of what makes our elopement and engagement sessions unique, fun, and relaxing. Sure: You’ll have to pose in front of the camera, but you’ll also get to taste flowers, play with weeds that respond to your touch, and see wildlife you might have otherwise missed. On top of this, I love to give pointers to couples about the best places to stay, eat, hike, swim, drink, and more! Many of my couples can attest to this and have the pamphlets, Google Docs and text chains showing that I gave them enough recommendations to practically fill up their entire trip to Hawai’i! Joe jokes that I’m a travel agent born a few decades too late.

This couple was such a delight to work with and I could tell they needed to experience something unique and off-the-beaten path. L requested a spot with black rocks, turquoise waters, and an epic spot to watch the sunset. I sent over a few recommendations, including this one, which is almost entirely unknown to tourists. After carefully navigating difficult-to-find and even more difficult-to-drive 4x4 roads, they had a truly EPIC engagement session.

When you elope or do a couples session with us, we’re more than your photographers, videographers, officiants, and planners. We’re also your friends that are way too stoked to give away all our local knowledge so that you have the trip of a lifetime.

POV: Wedding Days can be Relaxing.

Imagine: A wedding day where…
You can just snuggle your partner and count the stars while listening to the waves and nocturnal birds.
You and your hubby watch the sunrise creep over the red canyon while you sip a cup of coffee.
You get a nap break after your ceremony :D
…

While many couples that had traditional weddings will tell you their wedding day was pretty stressful, our couples that eloped with us will tell you the exact opposite. When I plan elopements for couples, I try to prioritize moments of calm, moments to be present, and, of course, a mid-day nap time :D. We’ll try to make your day perfect for you, and create a schedule as action-packed or relaxed as our couples desires.

These two cuties got engaged in Hawaii! I had the honor of helping him pick out the perfect places for his surprise engagement and the next-day photoshoot. We try to make photoshoots fun, and playing and smooching in the water is about as fun as it gets 💕

Why should you elope?

Eloping is about celebrating your love in an intimate setting, allowing you to focus on each other, not on all the external factors a wedding usually dictates.

Experiences: The elopements we plan focus on the things our couples love and a deep love of the land our couples choose to elope on. Instead of getting married at a hotel ballroom, our couples opt to get married at sunrise at the world’s most beautiful locations: stunning beaches, colorful canyons, verdant mountain peaks, mossy rainforests, and more. Instead of a typical ceremony followed by a reception, our couples enjoy activities like hiking a mountain overlook, horseback riding along the coast, exploring a lava tunnel cave, cliff jumping, swimming under a waterfall, sipping on great coffee, soaking in a hot tub at their cabin, and so much more.

Guests: When you elope you can have just the people you feel closest with there with you. That might just mean you and your partner, or maybe you opt to have your family or chosen family.

Traditions: At a big wedding, there’s expectations that are hard to get away from: fancy venues, bridal parties, cake cutting, first dances, etc. Those traditions can be great but they’re not for everyone. I’ve met couples that hate cake that spent hundred of dollars on one for their wedding, just because they knew guests would expect one! When you elope, you can ditch the traditions that don’t vibe with you (not a dancer? How about no first dance!) and create new traditions based on your love (annual trips to visit the beach you eloped on; rock climbing as a couple; cooking a special dessert for each other).

Costs: Elopements can ease your wedding budget while still feeling luxurious! Most of our couples spend less than $15,000 on their elopement and honeymoon combined, which includes airfare, lodging, car rental, honeymoon activities, dining, hair and makeup, wedding attire, and all the things we provide (wedding planning, photography, videography, officiating, live music, permitting for stunning locations, and more). Meanwhile, the average wedding in the USA costs over $34,000… and that DOESN’T include the costs of a luxuri

Elopement Films with Original Music!?

I’m so amazed by Joe, our videographer, officiant, and musician. For every elopement video he’s created this summer, he’s written an ORIGINAL SCORE! He’s been starting with inspiration from the couple’s “song” (This couple’s first dance was “Conversations in the Dark” by John Legend) and creates his own score that follows the story of their wedding video, building in dramatic moments, reflective in the quiet moments. Here’s the final minute of this video. We’ve removed the couple’s vows from this video to let their words remain private and allow you to focus on this epic score.

People often ask where I’d elope. While I have about as many answers as ideas, there’s a few places I always come back to, and Mount Rainier is always a finalist.

The jagged mountains, framed by pine forests, looking out onto distant volcanic giants has an unreal quality about it. Scale takes on a whole new meaning. With views stretching for 50+ miles, the atmospheric haze blanketing the dozens of peaks creates an impressionistic gradient of abstract shapes. At dusk, the eerie bugle of elks bounces off cliffs and echos around your campsite.

While we photographed and planned this elopement many years ago, memories of it still fill me with awe: Watching this groom, fearful of heights, sit down with his wife on the 2000’ ledge to watch the sunset. The bride popping a bottle of wine her mom had purchased on the day she was born. The last glint of the sun’s light on the distant Mount Adams as dusk fell. The rich oranges that painted the saw-tooth peaks in a sunset that felt like it lasted hours.

And the mosquitos. But that’s a different story :D

These locations are just 30 minutes away, but they looks like a different continent.

O’ahu is a small, but mighty, island. Being able to drive from the East to West side in a matter of 30 minutes, you can easily experience Hawai’i’s deserts and rainforests all in a single morning.

O’ahu is great for couples that want:
-A night life (I love my home on the Big Island, but I’ll be the first to let you know how “big cities” shut down at 6pm :D)
-Quick access to a lot of activities, from hiking, snorkeling, shopping, horseback riding, dining, relaxing, ocean kayaking, and wildlife watching, all within a 1-2 hour drive
-Good public transit, where you have the option to not rent a car
-Scenic beauty

O’ahu is not great for couples that:
-Hate crowds! Most lodging options are in Waikiki, which has Vegas-on-the-beach vibes with lots of 30+ story buildings filled with people. That said, you can get out of Waikiki quickly if you rent a car, and can be hiking to this waterfall within 30 minutes.

What’s you and your partner’s FAVORITE couple activity? Why not include that activity in your elopement?

Anna and Brent love hiking, the outdoors, and a good dirt bike ride, so they asked us to help plan an elopement that honored all of that. They took an afternoon ride on a scenic OHV road, explored majestic views at Canyonlands National Park, and finished their day with a happy tear-filled ceremony on a massive cliff lit by a stunning sunset.
