Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine used an image of mine on the cover of its May 2026 Birding issue of a white-eyed vireo in the Texas Hill Country. I am always proud to be in TPW magazine.

I have a feature story in the March 2026 issue of Texas Highways magazine on the night-blooming cereus, or “queen of the night,” a rare, unique and highly threatened cactus that blooms only one night a year. Writer Rick Bass, San Antonio Botanical Garden scientist Kelsey Wogan and I chased them last year from Alpine to Balmorrhea. It was quite an experience. Rick's story is fantastic, too. Click the link for story and pics and check out the timelapse I did, too. https://texashighways.com/outdoors/the-mysterious-cereus-blooms-in-west-texas/. You can see more of my images from there project here:

These desert cereus plants flower only one day out of the year—at night, in the middle of nowhere—if at all

I just did some aerial photography in a small Cessna over the Sulfur River in NE Texas, the site of the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir that would be flooded to benefit the DFW Metroplex's thirst. The area is beautiful and damming it is neither wise nor necessary. There are many other ways to ensure we all have enough water. White fawnlily (erythronium albidum) blooming in winter, Tandy Hills Natural Area, Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Tandy Hills Natural Area is a protected remnant of the Fort Worth Prairie ecosystem just east of downtown. It is one of North Texas' most amazing natural ecosystems. The fawn lily blooms in the woody understory of forests adjoining the prairies. Featherfest is April 24-27 in beautiful Galveston, Texas. It is one of the biggest bird festivals around, and it has an awesome track of photographer classes and trips to nearby birding hotspots. I will be leading tours to and teaching several classes. Check the schedule for more info. One of the highlight trips I lead is a boat trip to a brown pelican rookery normally off limits to visitors I have done it for many years and it is great fun. I have the cover of the 2025 Texas State Travel Guide & Texas Official Travel Map. https://texashighways.com/travel-guide-and-map/ I have gotten a lot of mileage out of that bluebonnet photo! Texas Highways used it on a cover for their 2016 wildflower issue and that cover won the Gold medal for best cover of large circulation magazine at the 2017 International Regional Media Association awards. https://www.irmamagazines.com/portfolio-item/cover-30000-or-more/ The magazine's graphic design work is really fantastic. One of the best things I learned as an editorial photographer was to leave space for designers.

I just got my copy of Texas Highways and realized I have the cover (Bluebonnets in Big Bend) as well as the feature photo essay on Texas prairie ecosystems. Very cool and I love that the magazine is featuring stories about our native prairies. https://texashighways.com/issue/april-2025/

I have a featured photo essay and interview on wildflowers blooming all year round on Texas' amazing prairies and pocket parks in this month's issue of Texas Highways Magazine -- "Fields of Dreams: Wildflowers aren't just a spring occurrence -- the state's prairies bloom all year." https://texashighways.com/outdoors/wildflowers/wildflowers-year-round-photo-essay/ The story includes images from prairies protected by the Native Prairies Association of Texas and Nature Conservancy -tx To see more images of Texas Prairies and my broader project to document all Texas prairie ecosystems and the challenges they face, you can go to my Texas Prairies archive at https://seanfitzgerald.photoshelter.com/gallery-collection/Texas-Prairies/C00001fvYvUuJYU4
