There is something deeply relaxing about heading out with the camera just to have fun. No pressure, no rigid expectations, and zero agenda.

I locked the camera down on the tripod, took a breath, and let myself experiment. Playing with long exposures, tricky backlighting, or double exposures is pure creative downtime for me. It completely shifts your mindset from rushing through the day to watching the world unfold.

For this shot, I just kicked back and waited for the road to do its thing. Car after car rolled by until I caught the right wave of headlights and taillights weaving up the hill, cutting bright leading lines right into the dusk sky.

What are the odds that a camera, a mountain highway, and a 1990s Thunderbird would end up giving us our son?

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned briefly how Tammy and I came to become Calvin's parents about ten years ago. It definitely did not happen overnight, and he certainly did not come off a department store shelf.

Looking back, the chain of events that brought us together is unbelievable. It started with taking action photos along US 178, which led to reconnecting with a Mustang club, finding my dream Thunderbird Super Coupe, and striking up a conversation with another car enthusiast at Cars and Coffee. That friendship eventually led to an unexpected text around Christmas, a weekend trial, and a decision that completely changed our lives.

From sharing the exact same birthday forty one years apart to old photographs that hinted at our future years before we crossed paths, it became clear that fate had a plan for our family.

The wings at Charlie T's Original in Pendleton alone made finding a new cruise in worth every mile.

They have been doing this for 51 years, and it shows. We had never made it out to this spot before, but pairing a half century of incredible food with a solid car lineup made for an unbeatable evening. Grabbed a quick phone shot of the lot before digging in. Definitely adding this one to the return list. The owner is incredible.

This 1971 Ford LTD Convertible belongs to my son. Under the hood sits the factory 400 paired with a solid C6 transmission, carrying 112,000 original road miles.

Behind the Photo: Slide 01

Welcome to Behind the Photo, a weekly look into the technical craft, field memories, and true stories behind individual images.

This unique motorcycle hearse carried my father in law to his final resting place in a veterans cemetery. The funeral home was incredibly accommodating, allowing me the time and space to create a meaningful tribute.

At first glance, most people assume the transparent "ghost" look is digital trickery in Photoshop. In reality, it was done entirely in camera using an old film technique: a double exposure.

The process is simple in concept: two separate exposures recorded onto one frame. With the camera locked in place on a tripod, I took the first shot featuring the hearse parked alongside the headstones. The driver then pulled the hearse out of the frame, and I fired the second exposure of the empty background.

Because the landscape received light during both exposures while the hearse only received light during the first, the headstones and trees show right through the vehicle. The only computer work involved was standard post processing for exposure, contrast, tone, and cropping.

Spent Friday evening out at The Scoop on Main Street. The turnout was strong and the field had a good variety of rides parked throughout the evening.

Seeing this NAPA 16 Silverado truck on the grass was definitely a highlight. In the gallery, you will see 5 shots of the truck as an example of what a Holeshots session might look like, except a paid Holeshots session gets its own dedicated gallery. The truck parked away from the main crowd, so I took advantage and spent about 15 minutes at the vehicle getting the shots I wanted.
