Great little ski with Udon today out by Cut Bank Creek where I was a couple weeks ago in the last post. Kinda drift hopping and short little runs, few more inches and it’ll be way fun. Winter certainly has shown up though. Last few images are from ground during the last trip out to this zone…was a bit windy to throw the drone up today.

Sun was out, wind was gentle. Finally got out to one of my favorite zones near home base. and the dogs tagged along too. The natural geometry out here is something else.

Time passes once again on the edges of the Rocky Mountain Front. The color of the sun echos more blue than gold, the leaves have mostly fallen. Leaving behind white skeletons and burgundy carpeted forest floors. Autumn feels fully arrived and ready to lead us into the winter months. Amazing how much this place can change in 2 months.

Been a weird couple weeks, feeling healthy again and needed to change my perspective…what strange textures I continue to find from the perspective of the birds.

Been kind of a night owl lately chasing the cosmos…a handful of snaps from a recent cruise with the the dogs and and out near the Canadian Border. It’s kind of strange spot and bit of dirt road. The properties that line the road are frozen in time, the spot we walked into is no exception. Lived in one day and empty the next 25 years. Posters in the bedrooms and calendars in the outbuildings and main house seem to be the late 90s. The kitchen is stocked, furniture and dining room tables, dressers with clothes. It’s a strange spot. That’s what I’m usually looking for.

Found quite a nice dark spot beside the historic Bethany Lutheran Church north of Shelby and Dunkirk, Montana. I was out capturing images of the Milky Way to the West when a short substorm broke out for about 45 minutes to an hour around midnight! Couple of meteors snuck into frame just for good measure!

Truck ran out of dust and put in a new air filter, so dog squad and all loaded up to help refill all the nooks and crannies with as much dust as we could. Hat blew away a few times but I caught it. Put a couple sticks of wheat in it. Explored the NW edge of the Louisiana purchase and stumbled through prickly pear cactus like Lewis and Clark. Imagined millions of Bison and Pronghorn carpeting the horizon. Settled for farm equipment and grain elevators. Still pretty. Well played Montana.

More running around in the dark. Hiding from the lights! Found a spot dark enough with a clear night to catch Comet Lemmon [C/2025 A6 (Lemmon)]

Not quite naked eye visible, I managed to catch it with a couple different lenses. I’ve been fascinated by watching the night sky and trying to capture images of it since the 96-97 passing of Hale-Bopp.

2020 was the last major one I photographed, Comet NEOWISE was insane.

It’s no longer just stars and comets. It’s space junk and the hustle and bustle of near earth orbit, and it is getting noticeably worse every year since 2020.

Quite a lot of traffic in the sky, it is a problem no matter how dark a place I find. Astronomers are speaking concerns about their ability to image far off objects if the telescopes are located on earth. Why? The thousands of satellites and flights circling the globe. Passing in front of what they’re trying to capture.

Kind of a bummer and worth thinking about if perfect cell service and internet matters that much?

Go find the dark and remember what it’s like to look up before we trade meteor showers for de-orbiting junk.
