The Culpeper Project

The Culpeper Project A long-term photographic observation of Culpeper, Virginia.

This documentary work doesn’t aim for images based solely on aesthetic value, but focuses on quiet, honest images that gain value through accumulation, building a visual anatomy of the town.

Ken Gassman contacted me shortly after I made The Culpeper Project public and graciously offered access to his substantial photography archive documenting Culpeper in the early 1960s. He supplied photographs to the Culpeper Star-Exponent as well as the Culpeper County High School yearbook, The Colonnade, which remains in print today.

It was historical photographs of Culpeper that inspired me to begin documenting Culpeper intentionally in my own era. Seeing images like Ken's helped me realize that photographs of ordinary places and everyday life can become far more meaningful 50 or 60 years later. I look forward to featuring more of Ken's work here in the future. Thank you, Ken, for preserving these moments for generations to come.

This first group of photographs should look familiar. They show the building beside the train depot that Culpeper has been mourning following last week's fire, along with its interior and proprietor, Jimmy Kreticos, who operated the restaurant there for many years.

Photographs by Ken Gassman, circa 1962–1964.

Five years ago, Two Sisters opened in Culpeper.

This photograph, made in 2024, shows the original coffee truck, Stevie, before the move to a permanent storefront.

Congratulations, Two Sisters, on five years keeping Culpeper caffeinated and awake.
