Dave Riewe Photography Landscape and Citycape photography based in Minneapolis. Custom prints - canvas, metal, glass, merch My name is Dave.

In my 40's as I got back into a childhood hobby- camping, and accidentally discovered a talent for photography. It was my way of hitting the “save button” of my mind’s eye in order to bring back some of the natural beauty of Minnesota’s State Parks. I began to collect mileage in the State Parks’ Hiking Club and finished all 200 miles by visiting 70 parks over the course of three years from 2012 to

2015. During that time I also bought my RV camper trailer (Stella) which helped me get out and about, sometimes even beyond Minnesota’s borders. Stella has taken me, along with friends and family, to Texas and back as well as around Lake Michigan. After all of that camping and travel my photography skills got plenty of development. Photography has become such a habit that my most common subject has become Minneapolis, where I live and work. With lots of good feedback on Facebook and Instagram I began to sell prints and canvases, as well as calendars over the past few years. This website will serve as a gallery for family, friends, and even strangers to view what I’m up to and start a conversation about any of my work that they would like to hang in their home.

Hummingbird

Every fall, before peak colors and it gets actually cold, the Hummingbirds migrate from up north (where my mom feeds a bunch at our cabin). As they pass through Minneapolis they have learned to stop by the Longfellow wildflower garden near Minnehaha Falls. It's like and all-you-can-eat buffet for these little ones. I typically take off right after work and shoot a couple hundred shots in order to get a few that are this good. It's even better to include the flowers themselves.

People sometimes feel they need to be able to articulate why they want a particular work before they are allowed to buy it. That is not how it works.

The attraction does not need a defense. You do not have to be able to explain Mama Bear to someone who asks; you just have to know it belongs in your space.

The explanation, if you want one, tends to arrive later on its own.

Every work that reaches a collector is the result of many decisions, including the decision not to show what came before it.

The finished work is not the whole story. It is the end of a longer, quieter process that most collectors never see.

When you live with Northwoods Sunbeam, you are living with the result of the artistic process and all that comes with it.

Bean and Bear

Social media isn't entirely a cesspool of negativity - participating in online photography groups has opened up opportunities for my growth and development as a photographer. It's also how I was made aware of this iconic view up on the Superior Hiking Trail outside of Silver Bay, MN. Although I did the entire Hiking Club trail list for the MN State Parks, I've never hiked much of the S*T. I've accidentally stumbled upon some stretches of it in Duluth as well as Jay Cooke State Park. When I learned that is how to get to this vantage point I thought I could handle that, no big deal. I've done this hike two times, once in August 2022 and again for fall colors, late September 2023, and both times kicked my butt. It's only a seven-mile route in and out, but the elevation changes over slippery rocks and tree roots are very challenging. The view is breathtaking, and the images are totally worth it. I'm not sure I'd do it a third time, though. This image is also available in my Panorama gallery.

Interior designers often talk about sightlines. They're the natural path your eye travels when you enter or move through a room.

Most people never think about this consciously, but they feel it. Art placed directly in a sightline changes a room immediately.

Placement is as intentional as the work itself.

I think "Barred Owl" could fit into a few different places. Where will you display it?

After I got hooked on chasing owls up north, I heard that there are owls to be found closer to home too! In this case, I heard about a couple mating pairs that have nests in Fort Snelling State Park. After getting a general location I scooted down to where I was told to look, and . . . Bam! This guy was just looking calmly at me. The thing about owls is, they are always watching you for a while before you spot them. This guy's big black eyes are fascinating.

A lot of people hold off on collecting art because they rent and feel uncertain about committing to walls they do not own. But art does not belong to a wall. It belongs to you.

Renting is not a reason to live with bare walls. It is a reason to collect work that matters enough to keep moving (and growing) with you.

"Minnesota Up North" and my other work are connected to the people who love them, not just the places they're displayed.
