Dave Riewe Photography Landscape and Citycape photography based in Minneapolis. Custom prints - canvas, metal, glass, merch My name is Dave.

In my 40's as I got back into a childhood hobby- camping, and accidentally discovered a talent for photography. It was my way of hitting the “save button” of my mind’s eye in order to bring back some of the natural beauty of Minnesota’s State Parks. I began to collect mileage in the State Parks’ Hiking Club and finished all 200 miles by visiting 70 parks over the course of three years from 2012 to 2015. During that time I also bought my RV camper trailer (Stella) which helped me get out and about, sometimes even beyond Minnesota’s borders. Stella has taken me, along with friends and family, to Texas and back as well as around Lake Michigan. After all of that camping and travel my photography skills got plenty of development. Photography has become such a habit that my most common subject has become Minneapolis, where I live and work. With lots of good feedback on Facebook and Instagram I began to sell prints and canvases, as well as calendars over the past few years. This website will serve as a gallery for family, friends, and even strangers to view what I’m up to and start a conversation about any of my work that they would like to hang in their home.

Chester Creek Winter

April of 2019 I took a late-winter trip to the cabin and stopped by one of my favorite city waterfalls. Just off of Skyline Drive is Chester Creek, which flows through town near the campus of UMD. April is still usually quite winter-y in Duluth. But at least the creek was flowing with the beginnings of the melting snow that signals the coming of spring. Long-exposure waterfall shots were my first obsession in photography. This image is my favorite style, a one-second exposure. That's still "long" considering most photographs are taken with a tiny fraction of a second worth of exposing the film or sensor to light. This style allows a few drops of water to trace their path through the frame and then appear as individual strands of silvery hair if you look close enough.

Fluffy Bear

Fluffy Bear. A great location that allows photographers, and other interested tourists, up-close access to wildlife is the Vince Shute Bear Sanctuary outside of Orr, Minnesota. Vince originally tried to run a lumber camp, but bears kept breaking into his kitchen and eating all the pancake mix. Eventually, he gave up the lumber camp and started charging tourists to visit and see the bears. Even after Vince's passing there are volunteers living among the bears and conducting research. There are no real fences, the bears are wild and free to come and go. But they know when it's dinnertime every day in the summer. This bear looks like he's been carefully shampoo'ed and blow dried. I don't know how that look was achieved. Using Photoshop, I was able to remove some distracting bugs, but I'm not good enough to make dirty fur look clean.
