Meet Kathy Corcoran

Kathy has called Corning home her entire life. After spending more than 30 years working for Corning Incorporated, a career that took her all over the world, retirement gave her the opportunity to lean into a hobby she had grown to love—stained glass.

What started as a creative outlet 14 years ago eventually became Capture Stained Glass, a tucked-away gem in Painted Post that she opened three years ago.
Today, people can stop in and create their own stained glass suncatcher to take home the very same day. Her shop offers several designs to make for suncatchers, each piece cut by hand and prepared by Kathy.

Capture Stained Glass also offers multi-week stained glass classes and creates custom commissioned pieces.

When I asked Kathy how the shop came to be, she shared:

"I kind of had the idea that this could be a business. After working for Corning, I love people and I travelled all over the world with Corning Inc. I really like the area, I really like the people, and I wasn’t ready to just sit and not do anything. But I also wasn’t ready or prepared to do any more travel, so I started thinking about doing this, and I tested it out with some friends. We found three hours works out perfect, and by the time they’re done, they’re going, they can’t believe they made it!"

Talking with Kathy, it's easy to see that this isn't just about stained glass. It's about sharing a skill she's spent years learning, connecting with people in her community, and proving that retirement doesn't have to mean slowing down. Sometimes it's the perfect time to start something new.

Can we all agree that babies have absolutely no business growing up this fast? 🥹

One minute they're tiny enough to curl up on your chest, and the next they're sitting, crawling, standing, and giving you the biggest gummy grin.

That's exactly why I love milestone sessions.

I bring my little studio setup right into your home, so there's no rushing around or packing everyone into the car. We keep things slow, relaxed, and baby-led while capturing all those sweet little expressions and tiny details you'll want to remember forever.

If your little one has a milestone coming up, I'd love to help tell this part of their story. 🤍

If you've ever met Kira Woods, you know she has the kind of energy that lights up a room. As the lead singer of Kira and the Kindness, her love for music is impossible to miss. But what really stood out while talking with her was how much her band means to her. As she spoke about her bandmates, her eyes started to well up—it was one of those moments where you could just feel how grateful she is.

“It feels really good to be a part of the musical community here because that is something that I always wanted but never found anywhere else that I lived.”

Music has always been a part of Kira's life. Growing up surrounded by musicians on her father's side of the family, she started playing classical piano as a kid.

Kira moved to Corning almost three years ago, and her band came together in the most unexpected way. Through her mom, who is a Corning local, she met Lori Lyn Barrett, a longtime local musician, who introduced her to everyone—including her now bassist, Lisa, who is Lori’s wife. They jammed together a few times, and before they knew it, everything started falling into place.

“The thing that really spearheaded the project was I participated in a karaoke contest at The Brick, and part of my prize was a performance at GlassFest on the main stage. Obviously, I was not going to do that by myself, so I was like, ‘You guys—Paul, Mike, and Lisa—will you do this with me?’ And they said yes! And I was like, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ And it kind of just went from there, and it's really been like a dream come true.”

If you haven't had the chance to hear Kira and The Kindness yet, definitely check them out at one of their upcoming shows at The Office or Music in the Square in Corning. You'll quickly see why Corning is so lucky to have them!🩷💛💜

The tiny toes. The wobbly sits, first claps, and belly laughs. The way they look at you before they can even say your name. 🤍

Your baby's first year is full of milestones that seem to come and go overnight. One day they're learning to sit, and before you know it they're taking their first steps.

That's why I bring my cozy in-home studio right to you. No packing up the diaper bag. No rushing out the door. No added stress. Just a relaxed, baby-led milestone session in the comfort of your own home, where your little one can be themselves.

These sessions are all about preserving who they are right now...their little expressions, curious personalities, and all the tiny details you'll never want to forget.

If you've been thinking about documenting your baby's first year, I'd love to help you capture this chapter before it becomes the next one.

Send me a message to book your milestone session or ask any questions—I can't wait to meet your little one. 🤍

Meet Nicholas Sweet.
A lifelong Corning resident, Nicholas has called this community home since his family moved here when he was young. Over the years, he's become known for wearing many hats—as a playwright, actor, and educator.

When I asked how Corning has influenced his creative work, he smiled and said:
"You know people call Corning a Hallmark town. So it’s kind of like the perfect place to set any kind of story. I actually wrote a haunted house script that was based on the Tagsylvania haunted house. I used their format of the main haunted house there and used it as part of the script. I definitely look for inspiration in the area because people say, 'Write what you know'… and this is what I know."

Our small-town community has found its way into some of Nicholas’ work, proving that inspiration can often be found close to home.

You can find some of Nicholas' scripts by searching the National New Play Network's New Play Exchange database.

Meet Ashley Crimmins-

After living in different areas of New York and Chicago, Ashley Crimmins now calls Corning home.

Ashley serves as the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator at CareFirstNY, connecting compassionate community members with opportunities to support hospice patients and their families throughout Chemung, Steuben, and Schuyler counties. What started as an unexpected path into hospice care soon grew into a true calling.

"We live in a world where death and dying is scary, and nobody wants to talk about it, but we need to talk about it. Everybody is going to get there at some point in time, and if I can help educate people on that and what they need to do to prepare, I'm happy to do so."

Her passion for caring for others doesn't stop when the workday ends. Ashley is also the owner of Baked and Boozy, an in-home bakery serving up everything from classic sweet treats to alcohol and THC-infused creations. For Ashley, baking is another way to show love and connect with people.

Whether she's helping families navigate difficult conversations or creating something delicious in her kitchen, Ashley's mission is the same: caring for others.

If you've ever considered volunteering with hospice and making a meaningful difference in someone's life, Ashley would love to hear from you. Reach out to [email protected] to learn more about volunteer opportunities with CareFirstNY.

Meet Catlin Chissom, owner of Laurel Tree Painting.

As a child, Catlin spent plenty of time on Market Street while her mom worked downtown. Years later, she found herself experiencing a full-circle moment while painting the exterior of one of Corning's favorite gathering spots, The Office.

“I had never painted anything on the street, and the amount of time I was here as a kid I was never once expecting I would collaborate on something. It was really cool to put a little piece of me on Market Street.”

Catlin's love for the trade started by working alongside her father and seeing firsthand the craftsmanship and dedication he brought to his work. Inspired by those experiences, she decided to carve out her own path and launched Laurel Tree Painting in 2024.

Today, Catlin handles a variety of interior and exterior painting projects throughout Steuben County and beyond. As a young female business owner in a traditionally male-dominated industry, she's proving that talent, hard work, and determination speak louder than stereotypes.

Whether she's refreshing a family home, transforming a local business, or leaving her mark on a familiar piece of Corning, Catlin is building a business she can be proud of…

“ It feels kind of like a weird dream that I’m in, where I’m like, are you really doing this? I feel very accomplished…
