Not every Colorado elopement requires a 6 mile hike.

Some couples love the adventure of hiking into the mountains.

Others prefer exploring rugged 4WD roads that lead to ridiculous views without the uphill suffering.

Both can lead to some pretty incredible ceremony spots.

It really just depends on what kind of adventure you want your wedding day to feel like.

So now I’m curious.

4WD mountain roads or hiking trails?

Let me tell you about 5AM on an elopement day.

Getting dressed in a trailhead parking lot in the dark. Stars overhead. Breath visible in the cold air. Wedding outfits layered under puffy jackets while it’s still completely pitch black outside.

Then headlamps on, hiking to a first look on a wooden bridge while alpenglow is happening behind them like it’s nothing.

Then vows at the edge of a lake and a moose walked in. Not figuratively. An actual moose who had somewhere to be and did not care about the ceremony. We stepped back. He swam across the lake. We continued.

This is what the 4AM alarm is for.

Okay Colorado really said choose your fighter here.

Snowy mountain elopement
or
wildflower meadow elopement.

Winter elopements feel quiet and dramatic. Trails are empty, the mountains look ridiculous covered in snow, and everything feels kinda peaceful in that “did we accidentally get the entire park to ourselves??” way.

Wildflower season is the opposite energy. Meadows absolutely popping off with color, warm summer air, and the kind of sunsets where everyone just stands there like… okay wow.

The catch?

Wildflowers only last a few weeks and winter requires accepting that your fingers might stop functioning halfway through vows.

Both are incredible.

So be honest.

Okay I need to know where you stand on this.

Because sunrise and sunset elopements genuinely feel like two different personalities and I am fascinated by which one you are.

Sunrise people are the ones who willingly set a 4AM alarm and feel alive hiking in the dark with a headlamp and warm coffee. The mountains are completely empty. The light is soft and a little unreal. It feels like the whole world is still asleep and this moment is entirely yours.

Sunset people are the ones who slept in, spent the day doing whatever they wanted, and then wandered into golden hour like “yeah we’re getting married in this.” The light is dramatic. The energy is celebratory. You feel it.

Both are correct. Both will result in photos you stare at for the rest of your life.

Everyone imagines the big moments.

The views. the ceremony. the photos.

But the part that sticks? The quiet right after.

When it’s just the two of you, no one talking. No expectations. Just sitting there like...wait. we actually did it.

That moment hits harder than anything else all day.

And it’s the reason I will always build in time for you to just exist together instead of rushing to the next thing.

Everyone pictures this calm, quiet, movie-like moment.

And sometimes it is.

But also...it’s wind whipping your hair across your face, forgetting your vows halfway through, laughing because you’re nervous, and just kind of figuring it out together in real time.

And honestly? That version is better.

It’s real. It’s you. It’s something you’ll actually remember instead of something that felt staged. And that’s what it’s all about anyway.

It always starts the same way...

“We just want something small”

And then suddenly we’re watching the sunrise, hiking to alpine lakes, popping champagne, chasing golden hour, and ending the day with the kind of quiet that makes you go “oh… this is why we did this”.

Small doesn’t mean less.
It just means more intentional.
