farming is alive in maryland and there are countless ways to see it up close

This weekend you can visit Old Ellicott City Farmers Market in historic Ellicott city to meet local producers.

You can head out to western Maryland to visit South Mountain Creamery or Happy Cow Creamery to hike and try locally made ice cream on the Maryland's Best ice cream trail.

You can tour Wild Kid Acres | Western Riding, Trail & Pony Rides, Farm Tours and trail ride with a guide or learn to ride a horse.

If you ask SUPER nice, you might even be able to hang out with CJ Canby Crab Dad and learn what it takes to be a commercial crabber.

Summer is fading. Don’t waste it inside.

Saturday with Haile Farmers Market (Gainesville, FL) was a win.

I moved down to Ocala last week and couldn’t have found a better spot to connect with community. Gainsville is a short trip up 75 and on the way up I wasn’t sure what to expect.

As I made the last turn into the Historic Haile Homestead it was unreal. The street is lined with live oak and you could hear the music making its way down the narrow road.

Parking was easy and the vendor were top notch.

Special thanks to Pam the market manager and Kevin the president of the board for making me feel right at home.

This one will be on rotation for me.

Western Maryland has so much to explore, and one of the best ways to see it all is with a little day trip: a hiking adventure followed by a stop at one of Maryland’s small, family run creameries for ice cream.

Happy Cow Creamery is more than just a place to grab a scoop. It’s a working dairy farm where you can meet the cows, chickens, goats, and more up close.

Meet the Savages: Chip, Isha, and their two boys, proudly running Grand View Acres Farm.

This weekend’s pairing: Soldiers Delight Natural Environmental Area, Choate Mine and Red Run Trail, a 2-mile easy loop, followed by farm fresh soft serve, hand-dipped hard serve, and a whole lot of family fun.

what are you doing on saturday , August 22nd at 930AM?

kelly, paige, and i have been putting together something that i think is going to be really special.

we’ll kick things off with a 90 minute guided breathwork session led by kelly. if you’ve never tried breathwork before, don’t overthink it. just show up. most people leave feeling calmer, lighter, and a whole lot more ready for monday than they expected.

after that we’ll tour circle r arena with paige reynolds as she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at life on a working horse farm. you’ll meet the horses, hear a little about her journey as a professional rodeo athlete, and get a glimpse into the lesson program she runs here in reisterstown.

honestly, the whole idea is pretty simple.

spend a few hours outside.

meet some good people.

pet a few horses.

have some light refreshments and leave feeling like you actually did something with your weekend instead of watching it disappear.

it’s $55 per person and includes three hours on the farm, the breathwork session, light refreshments, and hopefully a sunday you’ll remember for a while.

Wild Kid Acres | Western Riding, Trail & Pony Rides, Farm Tours is a regenerative farm in Edgewater where you can visit to learn how they employ regenerative farming techniques to restore depleted soil and raise livestock.

they also offer trail rides and horsemanship lessons so if you want to get out there and learn more about ranch life this is the place to be.

last week we caught up with CJ Canby Crab Dad to check in on our crabbers in maryland

i’ve had the opportunity to connect with CJ a few times over the past few years and really appreciate the opportunity to spend a little time on the FV MISS PAULA.

there are little pockets of culture that become invisible to most people as they go about their lives

i think it’s important to get some awareness into the day to day reality of the people who supply our food and support our local Maryland culture.

for me, Poe Country isn’t about “hey this is cool look at it” it’s more about “hey meet this guy and through him, get a feel for why it’s important to support our local agricultural scene.”

after you meet the people you’re more inclined to make choices that support them

eat local

mind your wake

don’t liter

be cool

two years ago, i started photographing horses in maryland.

at first it was just because because i was looking for something fun to shoot.

horses made sense.

they deserve the attention.

they’re powerful, beautiful, athletic, and somehow manage to be both wild and gentle at the same time.

but after spending the last two years in barns, at rodeos, on trails, in pastures, and along fence lines across maryland, i’ve realized the horses aren’t the whole story.

they’re a foundation upon which a whole world is built.

where the people wake up before sunrise because there’s work to be done before going to work.

friendships built in barn aisles.

families that spend their weekends together outside instead of staring at screens.

kids learn responsibility.

adults find confidence.

the conversations that happen while mucking stalls, fixing fences, or sitting on the bleachers after a long day.

horses have a way of bringing people together, but they also have a way of teaching people about themselves.

they don’t care about your title, your income, or what kind of car you drive.

they respond to patience consistency and trust.

maybe that’s why these places feel different.

in a world that seems increasingly disconnected, horse farms remain one of the few places where people still gather around something real.

something that pulls you out of your head and back into the present moment.

its funny how it started as just walking the fence line looking for photos then turned into a daily obsession with trying to show people a deeper way of living.
