Purple Gallinule at the Wetlands on 9/27/2026...right before I broke my ankle! 🩹

We first saw these beautifully colored marsh birds when we moved to Florida, and I am always delighted to see their bright plumage.

I see Limpkins pretty often at the wetlands, but usually they’re busy walking around or wading through the water. Catching one in flight? Not nearly as common! So of course, my Bird Nerd self was pretty excited about this shot.

Limpkins are one of my favorite wetland birds. They specialize in eating apple snails, which they hunt both day and night. If you find little piles of empty snail shells along the edge of a freshwater wetland, you’ve probably found evidence of a Limpkin’s latest feast. 🐌

And their call… oh, that call! 😳 Their haunting cries sound almost otherworldly and are definitely one of those sounds you don’t forget once you’ve heard it.

I came across this gorgeous Eastern Black Swallowtail enjoying the blooms of Pickerelweed here in Central Florida.

I love how the sunlight brings out those flashes of iridescent blue among the black, yellow, and orange markings. And those tiny details are exactly why I love getting out with my camera and looking a little closer at the wildlife around us. 💙

Nature is pretty incredible when you stop and look.
