This is why I love actor headshots.

Because one minute we’re getting ā€œsuccessful business professionalā€ and the next minute I’m looking through the camera thinking…

ā€œYep. He definitely knows who did it.ā€

šŸ˜‚

Same actor.
Same session.
Completely different vibe.

The smallest shifts in expression can completely change the story an image tells.

Which images grabs your attention first? šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

2026, respectfully…what are we doing here? šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØāœØ

We’re only halfway through the year and the caliber of humans stepping in front of my camera has been unreal.

The talent.
The stories.
The career pivots.
The confidence.
The outfits.

Every single session has reminded me why I love this work so much.

Here’s to the first half of the year and all the iconic humans still to come.

Hi, I’m Karri (pronounced like Carrie) šŸ‘‹šŸ»

If you’re new here, welcome, make yourself comfortable. I’m a photographer and professional over-thinker of light, people, and good stories.

A few random things about me:

🤿 I’ve been snorkeling in Alaska (I do not recommend hesitation-based life choices)
šŸ‘¶šŸ¼ I’ve been an entrepreneur for 23 years… starting as a babysitter/pet sitter
šŸ¤ŸšŸ¼Studied sign language as a co-major with theatre
šŸž Living with Celiac & eating GF for 23+ years
🤣 Spent years in an all-female sketch comedy troupe
🐹My first pet was a guinea pig named Miss Piggy
šŸ“ø Learned photography in my high school dark room days (film + chemicals + the 1900s)
šŸ“· I recently upgraded to my first mirrorless camera — hello Nikon Z5ii

I didn’t ā€œbecomeā€ a photographer, I circled back to something I’ve loved since I was young and built a life around it in 2008 when I went back to college in my 30s.

Now I get to work with actors, creatives, entrepreneurs, and corporate clients - helping people be seen in a way that actually feels like them.

That’s the work I care about most.

Not just pretty photos, but presence. Truth. Confidence. A little spark you recognize when you see yourself.

I’m also a retired SAG-AFTRA actor, comedian but a lifelong storyteller, and a big believer in humans building bold lives on their own terms.

Somewhere between all of that, I fell in love with slowing down long enough to really see people and I think that’s what my work is really about.

I’m so glad we found each other.

And if we ever work together, just know I will absolutely be obsessed with you by the end of your shoot.

The problem wasn’t that she wasn’t photogenic.

It was that nobody had shown her how to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

After several disappointing photo sessions over the years, Stephanie came to me carrying understandable doubts about having her picture taken.

As a theatre professor and stage director at U of M Flint, she’s used to helping others step into their roles, but standing in front of the camera herself felt different.

So we slowed down.

We talked.

We laughed.

We played a few games to get her out of her head.

I showed her images throughout the session so she could see what I was seeing.

And little by little, the worry melted away.

These are the moments I love most.

Not just creating beautiful headshots in Detroit’s dreamy spring light (though Michigan has absolutely been showing off lately ā˜€ļø), but helping someone reconnect with the version of themselves they hoped the camera would capture all along.

Stephanie, thank you for trusting me with your story.

You are vibrant, warm, intelligent, and wonderfully you.

And these images prove it. ā¤ļø

As photographers, there are certain spaces that instantly spark something in you. ✨

Yesterday was my first time shooting at The Lucky Penny Studio in downtown Rochester, and before I even unpacked my camera bag, ideas were already flying.

The natural light was incredible. The details were thoughtful. Every corner felt intentionally designed to inspire creativity.

I photographed a local screenwriter for new headshots and spent the entire session thinking about all the possibilities this space offers for actors, entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals who want something a little different from the typical studio experience.

And then I got to meet the owners. šŸ’

They’re the kind of people who make you root for a business — warm, welcoming, creative, and genuinely passionate about what they’ve built.

I left with beautiful images for my client, a phone full of behind-the-scenes footage, and a growing list of ideas for future sessions.

Safe to say this won’t be my last visit.

Have you ever walked into a space and immediately felt inspired?

šŸ‘‡ Tell me where.

HOLD UP…THIS IS THE SAME GUY. šŸ‘€

Former print model.
Accomplished surgeon assistant.
Medical board leader.

And now?

He’s stepping back into acting after more than a decade away from ā€˜the biz.’

Swipe through and count how many characters Rich became in a single session:

🩺 Trusted doctor
āœˆļø Sophisticated traveler
šŸ· Country club regular
ā¤ļø Romantic lead
šŸ‘“ Warm-hearted grandpa
šŸ’¼ Commercial professional
šŸ¤ Caring support staff
āœ‹ Even a little hand-modeling magic

The best part? None of these roles are a stretch.

They’re all already in him.

What I loved most about photographing Rich wasn’t his rĆ©sumĆ© (which is impressive). It was his willingness to fully invest in this next chapter and show up with curiosity, pure joy, and zero ego.

The result? A portfolio packed with possibility.

And if casting directors see what I saw that day…

I have a feeling he’s going to be very busy.

✨ Here’s to reinvention.
✨ Here’s to betting on yourself.
✨ Here’s to proving it’s never too late for a new chapter.

šŸ“Æ Your headshot should tell casting who you are before you ever say a word.

One of the things I love most about photographing young actors is helping them discover where they fit right now, while also honoring where they dream of going.

🧔 Maddie is 14 and already has such a distinct presence in front of the camera. Her agent in Georgia found my work online, and when we started talking before her session, it became clear very quickly that she wasn’t looking for ā€œgeneric smiling kid actorā€ headshots. She wanted work that actually reflected the kinds of stories and characters she feels drawn to.

Most of her experience so far has been on stage in musicals, but for on-camera work?

Horror. Comedy. Dry wit. Complex characters.

The girls who say little but see everything.

The characters you can’t quite figure out.

And honestly… the second she settled into the session, it clicked.

That’s the magic that can happen when actors stop trying to ā€œlook like an actorā€ and instead start connecting to character, tone, and emotional truth. Suddenly the images have specificity. Casting can feel where you belong.

Throughout her session, we intentionally explored both sides of her range:

šŸ’„ grounded dramatic intensity
šŸ’„ quirky dry humor
šŸ’„ warmth and innocence
šŸ’„ darker emotional energy

And that range matters. Especially for younger actors stepping into TV and film.

Can’t you totally see her in Stranger Things? Or in a dark comedy? Or playing the kind of quietly unsettling character that steals every scene?

I’m so honored I got to photograph Maddie’s very first professional theatrical headshots for both stage and screen. She has something incredibly special.

What roles do you see her playing? šŸ‘€

Stiff. Over-posed. Completely not you? Yeah… we’re not doing that here. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Sascha came to me from a previous client after walking away from a rushed, stiff experience that didn’t feel like her at all. She wanted a headshot for her 9-5 that felt polished and authentic…something that reflected both her professionalism and personality.

A little guidance, igniting her personality, approval every step of the way and one relaxed session later — THIS was the result. ✨

Now she has a photo she’s proud to put on her LinkedIn, business cards, and everywhere her brand shows up — and we’re already planning her next personal branding shoot for her Yoga practice.

Suzi is a beloved icon in the theatre scene throughout Metro Detroit (and beyond).

Her accolades are astounding – theatre director, casting agent, actress, and many more behind the scenes on stage and screen.

Thank you Suzi — what an honor to get to support you with these new set of headshots! šŸ¦‹

One of the biggest things I hear from actors:

ā€œMy headshots don’t really look like me… and I’m not getting called in.ā€

That was exactly where Heather was when she found me.

Heather is a full-time doctor who has wanted to seriously pursue acting for quite some time. Before working together, she had invested in multiple professional sessions — including shooting with a photographer in Los Angeles — but something still wasn’t connecting. The images didn’t align with the roles she was actually right for, and more importantly… they didn’t fully feel like her.

That’s where strategy matters.

Industry standard headshots are not just about having beautiful photos. They need to communicate your casting clearly, honestly, and authentically. Your headshots should help casting directors immediately understand where you fit while still feeling like a real human being standing in front of them.

For Heather, we intentionally built looks around:
✨ The knowledgeable medical professional
✨ The warm, approachable mom / friendly neighbor energy
✨ The polished business professional

Every wardrobe choice, expression, hair adjustment, and subtle shift in energy was done with purpose. We collaborated through the entire process, and she trusted me enough to let me guide her while also making sure she felt seen and comfortable every step of the way.

And THIS is why I care so deeply about the planning process before we ever pick up the camera. The magic is understanding you, your essence, your casting, and creating images that finally feel aligned.

🄹After receiving her final gallery, Heather shared this testimony with me:

ā€œKarri did such amazing work and I absolutely love my new headshots for all of my agencies. Karri spent time with me and really cared how each photo came out. I’ve had many other photo shoots before, but I give her my absolute highest recommendation!ā€

Experiences like this mean everything to me. šŸ¤
