Zone 3 Photography

Zone 3 Photography I am Manuel Palacios an outdoor photographer living in upstate NY. I spend most of my time wandering For me, a landscape is an inviting living space.

Hi!, I am Manuel Palacios dad, scientist and outdoor photographer living in upstate NY. I spend most of my time wandering around in the Adirondacks; day and night. Quite often you will find me "somewhere" enjoying the outdoors and trying to interpret a landscape with my camera, certainly lost, but on the trail. Landscapes compel us to interpret them and to feel them without any previous knowledge

or background. Quite often, like gravity, landscapes have a tendency to ground us and to show us our little place in the Universe. This profound connection to landscapes is what brings us together in contemplation. In the words of Barry Lopez, "Landscape is the culture that contains all human culture.”

Yet another Joshua Tree. This was the last light just before twilight set in. I was shooting in a square frame and this little scene caught my eye. I guess I keep thinking of these photos as triptychs. Heading west today. I hope I can find some new shots.

Another Yucca Tree. I usually have terrible luck with skies. But when I saw those clouds in the back, I started running, looking for a tree that could show some narrative with the clouds. This shot is a little later than the previous one. So the quality of the light is different, and it is tough to work it out. I was lucky to be there with the master blaster of light and he shared more than a couple of great pieces of advice with me. DT is not only one of the best at the craft, but also one of the coolest and most generous dudes out there.

Life in the desert is harsh. How these yucca trees evolved and adapted to this habitat is mind-blowing. I worked on this one for a little bit too long on the field. I just loved that tree and how proud it was standing there in that beautiful and soft evening light. I wanted to bring that background into context, so I knew I wanted to use the tele, but I didn’t have a lot of space to work that in easily, but somehow it worked. The next few images are not tied to a collection just yet, but I will keep working on putting something together about life in the desert. I just realize this is the first sky I post in a while… geez skies are hard! Lol

“Buenaterra . 6”

I loved finding this little motive on the side of a mountain near Artist Palette 🎨… I couldn’t help it, and I just wanted to make it work. This image completes the second triptych for Buenaterra. Getting ready for our trip to the dessert. I hope I can find new scenes next week in Death Valley.

“Buenaterra . 5”

Here is another small vignette of Death Valley’s badlands. This scene is so colorful. What blows my mind about the badlands is that all five shots you have seen so far from Buenaterra were taken in the same location maybe a few hundred feet apart. The diversity of the landscape is incredibly inspiring.

“Buenaterra . 4”

This is the first one of the second triptych. On this one I focused more in color contrast and converging lines. Here again I try to look into small vignettes in the scene. For example this one I shot at 565m. On this triptych I also come back to a square aspect ratio.

“Buenaterra .3”

More Buenaterra. This is the last one of the first triptych. The theme here is pastel colors, textures and subtle light. In this one, you can see the direct sunlight kissing the top of the ridge. That was the very last shot of that morning.

“Buenaterra .2”

More Buenaterra. This series came together in the middle of twilight and before sunrise. But the first day I shot the badlands was special. Showing up in the middle of the night to a place you have never been and waiting for the landscape to reveal. I remember the excitement. I remember running like a crazy person because I realized I couldn’t find a composition I liked where I was. So, I started to look for the details instead of the bigger landscape. And this is how these vignettes came to be.

“Buenaterra .1”

This is a new series. “Buenaterra” is my interpretation of some of the iconic badlands in Death Valley. These are triptychs that I envisioned to be closely related to each other, either in tone or color or motif, and these images are small vignettes in a landscape that it could very well be on another planet. There is something so profound and powerful about the badlands; for me, it is one of the hardest subjects to shoot. I could say so much about my emotional connection to this landscape, but I will summarize it as follow: when I left, I knew I needed to go back.

“Voluptuosa .9”

This is the last image in the series. At least for now. I learned a lot while imagining, visualizing, shooting, and putting it together. This is another one of those “tricky ones,” but to illustrate the point easier, I added the shot of the wider scene where you can see where the “The Lady in the vail” is coming from. Yeah…. I know now I said vail you won’t be able to unsee it, but maybe you will make something else out of the image. I hope you enjoyed the Voluptuosa series. I will continue for a little bit with some Death Valley images as I am prepping for my next visit to Cali.

“Voluptuosa .8”

I shot this one on my last visit to Mesquite. It was a revision. I was there the day before with my buddy, and we shot this dune, but I didn’t get what I wanted. So I had to come back.
