Nickel Plate Road No. 765, tied down, Fitzwater Yard.

Then the crew went to a well earned lunch. At the restaurant the Muppet version of Bohemian Rhapsody played in the radio and we couldn’t stop laughing.

Nickel Plate Road No. 765 is in the Cuyahoga Valley!

In this view we see 765 moving from the working Baltimore & Ohio of CSX to the recreational Baltimore & Ohio of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

The day the steam locomotive came to town.

Ferry moves, deadhead moves, positioning moves, whatever you want to call them are always full of surprises. In my experience no two moves of Nickel Plate Road No. 765’s semi-annual journey to the Cuyahoga Valley from Fort Wayne have ever been identical.

Imagine my surprise when Nickel Plate Road 765 stopped right in front of me at the preserved New York Central Railroad Freight Depot in my hometown. This must have been the first time a steam locomotive has made a stop at this spot in over 70 years. The building itself is not to dissimilar from the many surviving NYC stations and structures found on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad which plays host to Fort Wayne Railroad’s Indiana Rail Experience.

The small group that had gathered at the right place at the right time witnessed something truly spectacular. One of countless unforgettable lifetime memories that are going to be made in the next two months.

It was a good time!

Big Boy is cool but my favorite operational articulated steam locomotive is the Beast of the East.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad No. 1309, a class H-6 2-6-6-2 Articulated Mallet built for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in 1949. It was the last steam locomotive delivered to the C&O and last steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for domestic use.

The chase of Pere Marquette 1225 was a good warm up for Union Pacific Big Boy 4014. There was quite a crowd for 1225 when it arrived at Holly, Michigan for the layover but I expect Big Boy’s crowds to be much larger. It was entertaining to overhear all the admiration the locomotive received while walking through the crowd.

The biggest happening in modern steam railroading is about to begin.
