I recently helped someone select photographs for a gallery wall in her home. She gave me a sense of her colors and style, I pulled together a selection of photos for her to consider, and she browsed my Instagram gallery and found others she wanted to use.

Twelve photos, all in the same frame and mat. I love the idea of seeing them come together as one collection, I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

A triptych from mother nature. I photographed these with a Helios lens, manufactured in the Soviet Union in 1984, sold to me by a photographer in Ukraine! I love the rendering from the lens, and the slowness involved using it. The breeze, surrounding flowers, and bright sunshine, plus the shallow depth of field, made this unique grass really pop.

Another trip around the sun for me but it's the moon and her phases I relate to. I’ve been thinking about how much can change in a year, how much changes in a lifetime, and if you're fortunate to live long enough, how one lifetime feels like many lifetimes.

These were all photographed with the Helios 44-2, a manual focus lens manufactured in the Soviet Union in 1984. I got it yesterday, shipped from Ukraine 🇺🇦.

I spoke yesterday of how photography slows things down, and that's even more true with this lens. It's a lens that lacks the clinical sharpness of today's glass (a good thing), and instead more than makes up for it with beautiful rendering and character.
