Name: Basil (Ocimum basilicum) 🌿
How often does it grow? Annually in climates that receive snow and freeze, Perennial or biannual in warmer climates.
Where does it come from? Native to the tropics • Southeast Asia and Central Africa
Does it have cousins? Yes, a lot of them! Basil is a part of the Mint family
Are there different flavors? You bet! The flavor should determine which variety you should use. The most common varieties are:
• Sweet Italian Basil - Pasta and pizza sauce
•Lemon Basil - Fish and shrimp
•Genovese -Pesto
•Holy Basil - Native to India and used as medicine. Tulsi tea is Holy Basil
•Thai Basil - Asian and Thai recipes
Can I grow it myself? You can brute basil from seed or by cutting a pieceof an established plant and letting it grow roots in water. You can transplant it to a pot and grow it like s houseplant or leave it in water indoors. Outdoors, You can grow Basil in pots or in the ground. Make sure to put it in partial sun. Too much sun will burn it.
Outside of what’s in the picture, does it have any other uses?
1) Basil serves as an excellent pest repellent for tomato and pepper plants for it keeps hornworms, aphids and white flies away. It also improves your soil health, helping it to hold on to necessary nutrients.
2) Fresh Basil is good for Culinary usages. Dried Basil is best for it’s medicinal properties. Rich in Vitamin K, antioxidants an anti inflammatory!
