Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, in Cape Vincent, New York, marks the point where Lake Ontario meeting the St. Lawrence River.

Built in 1827, Captain John Tibbetts of Troy, New York gave 3 acres of his 600 acres to the Federal Government to establish a Lighthouse. In 1854, the first tower was replaced by the present circular one. This year also marked the installation of the Fresnel Lens, which is still in operation. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed lighthouse duties until 1981 when the light was automated.

In 1988, the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Society was formed and in 1991 the Town of Cape Vincent acquired the lighthouse from the Department of the Interior. Since 1999, the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Society has funded numerous major renovations inside and outside.

One of the exciting things about the Thousand Islands region are all the massive ships traveling along the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Here are two photos of the John D. Leitch approaching the Thousand Islands Bridge. The John D. Leitch is a Canadian ship built in 1967, stretching out 730 feet!

Moonrise Over Grenell Island

Grenell Island is one of the smaller cottage colonies in the Thousand Islands. Grenell was home to one of the region’s earliest island inns. Though the inn no longer exists, Grenell Island Chapel (1896) still remains a centerpiece of the island. Grenell Island is a sociable community, with a path that winds throughout the perimeter of the shore, passing between boathouses and cottage porches.

Boldt Castle on Heart Island in Alexandria Bay, New York.

In 1900 George Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, started building this 120 room castle as a gift to his wife, Louise. Construction of the castle came to an abrupt halt in 1904, when Louise died unexpectedly.

George Boldt was unable to stomach the idea of completing the castle without his wife. He never visited the island again and the castle was left to the mercy of the elements for over 70 years. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and decided to rehabilitate it and preserve it for the enjoyment of future generations.

What comes to mind when you think of “New York”? Probably not the majestic Thousand Islands region that borders Canada. Hope you enjoy the adventure!
