Chicago doesn’t suffer from a lack of skill—it suffers from dispersion. When everything is shown, nothing is sharpened. Taste isn’t elitist. It’s editorial. It’s the discipline to choose, to withhold, to refine.

This essay explores why talent alone isn’t enough—and why discernment is the missing multiplier.

Fashion no longer belongs to a handful of capitals. Power has decentralized—quietly, steadily—and cities still waiting for permission are already behind. Chicago doesn’t lack talent. It lacks systems built for how fashion actually moves today. In an era where culture circulates digitally and relevance is built directly, the future won’t belong to the loudest city—but to the ones that understood the shift early and built anyway.

Chicago has never lacked style.
What it’s lacked is infrastructure.

Fashion cities aren’t built on aesthetics alone—they’re built on education pipelines, production, media continuity, and systems that retain talent. This essay explores why Chicago isn’t widely recognized as a fashion city, and what would actually need to change for that to shift.

Chicago loves to say it collaborates. But activity isn’t infrastructure—and visibility isn’t alignment. Too often, collaboration here lives in silos, short bursts, and optics instead of systems that compound. This essay explores scarcity mindset, fragmented scenes, and why real collaboration requires structure, trust, and continuity. Not a call-out. A call forward.

In April of 1950, Irving Penn photographed Jean Patchett for Vogue, creating one of the most enduring fashion images of the 20th century. Shot against a stark white backdrop, the portrait stripped fashion down to its purest form—line, posture, restraint, and presence. Penn’s genius wasn’t excess, but precision. Every detail was intentional. Every gesture quiet, yet commanding. The image became a blueprint for modern fashion photography, redefining elegance through simplicity.

More than seventy years later, that same visual language still speaks.

This reimagining pays homage to Penn’s original work while reframing it through a contemporary Chicago lens. Our subject is Leen Gundogdu—founder and designer of Kivanci—wearing her own designs, embodying the same sense of confidence, discipline, and timeless poise that Patchett once represented. Where Penn captured the spirit of post-war Paris, this portrait reflects modern Chicago: grounded, refined, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship.

The intention was not replication, but conversation. A dialogue between eras. Between legacy and living artistry. Between a fashion canon shaped in Europe and a creative voice flourishing in the Midwest. This image asks what it means to honor history while asserting presence—to stand inside tradition without being confined by it.

At The Chicago Edit, we believe Chicago has always had a fashion story worth telling. Sometimes, it simply requires looking backward to move forward.…
