Photographed a lawyer this week who wanted to move away from her old, stiff headshot. The ask: look approachable, but still look like someone who knows her stuff. That's a fun line to walk as a photographer.

One of my favorite parts of doing headshots is finding out what people actually do for a living. Had a client this week whose new headshot was the final step in a career coaching program she just finished. She works in convenience store slot machines. Never a dull day in this studio.

Sometimes corporate headshots aren’t glamorous. If the company doesn’t have a ton of space, you make it work!

This job did create some extra challenges because I photographed here before and mistakenly assumed everything would be the same. However, I was not in a storage room last time. 🤣

A big part of this job is solving problems on the fly, and this shoot was a good example of that. Not a disaster, not something out of the ordinary, just the kind of thing that comes up regularly when you're running a corporate headshot session. This video walks through what I was expecting going in and how it actually played out.

A friend came to visit, wanted to see the studio. So naturally we did headshots.

The difference when you already know someone is immediate.

No warmup, no small talk to break the ice, no five minutes of convincing them to relax. We just started shooting and the genuine stuff was there from frame one.

It’s a reminder that what I’m actually trying to recreate with every client is that feeling of photographing someone you already know. Shot this one at the studio in Chicago.
