Yesterday, I had the pleasure to check out Hamilton’s newest typewriter repair shop and micro museum, The Hamilton Typewriter Company, during its grand opening at the historic .
Owned and operated by the typewriter repair poet, , The Hamilton Typewriter Company is now booking appointments for vintage typewriter repair and appraisal.
With dozens of typewriters on display, and many of them for sale, Jonny plans on using the new space to open a dialogue about these typing tools of the past and pour his time and energy into an effort to bring them out of the basement and into the hands of a new generation.
What struck me the most was the passionate way Jonny talks about his craft. Each typewriter is unique and there are no shortcuts when learning how each typewriter works and learning what needs to be done to it to bring it back to working order. You need to have time, patience, and curiosity, in addition to a background or acquired skill in understanding small mechanics. A message that echoes my first typewriter mentor, Nick, from Hamilton’s original typewriter repair shop, Sigma Type.
I’m heartened to learn that Jonny has made a mark here in this city with his intention to follow in Nick’s footsteps, keeping the tradition of typewriters alive in this old city of ours.
For more info on The Hamilton Typewriter Company, see and inquire about an appointment to chat about a typewriter repair or purchase.
Thanks for doing what you’re doing, Jonny. It’s more appreciated than you know.
