What a treat to catch this bobwhite singing! This is only my second visual bobwhite sighting—though my fifth encounter with the species—and the first time I've actually watched one sing.

Bobwhites are unfortunately near threatened due to habitat degradation, and they've become nearly impossible to find in Charlotte. This one was at P*e Dee NWR in Anson County, NC, about an hour from uptown.

White-tipped Sicklebill | Panamá 🇵🇦

I was super excited to see this species at Canopy Lodge. Their very decurved bill allows them to feed on Heloconia flowers. This individual frequented a specific path of Heliconias at the lodge, so much so that there's a "sicklebill viewing area" set up with a bench there.

An aptly-named Violet-headed Hummingbird | Panamá 🇵🇦

I tried throughout most of the trip to get photos of this individual, who visited Canopy Lodge's feeders on a regular basis. They would never perch though, and would dart around the flowers, making it incredibly difficult. This was one of the last photos I took in Panamá, and a great way to end the trip.

2025 was a great year. I was fortunate enough to take my first solo birding trip with at their lodge in the beautiful Valle de Anton. Keel-billed Toucans were on my list of species I wanted to get great photos of while there, and they did not disappoint! This individual was incredibly cooperative and visited the lodge's fruit feeders, allowing for some fantastic looks.

Today I took the chance to drive out to Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines about 2 hours outside of Charlotte to see if I could spot a Red-cockaded Woodpecker. This is a species endemic to the southeastern United States, with somewhere in the ballpark of 15,000 individuals remaining in the wild. I was fortunate enough to see a family group, exhibiting some of the unique behaviors that make this woodpecker so special.

This species is a specialist of pine savannah habitats, which have greatly declined since the 1700s. It's estimated that the RCWO population today is just 1% of what it was 300 years ago. Conservation efforts have thankfully led to relative stability in the species population/breeding group count since the 1980s.

I was super happy to see this Roseate Spoonbill at McAlpine Creek Park today. This appears to be the 5th recorded on eBird for Mecklenburg County. I watched this individual for probably close to 30 minutes as it fed, using its distinctive spoonbill to skim the surface of the water. This is the third time I have personally seen a Roseate Spoonbill with these being by far my best looks.
