In spring, one of our favorite birds to find in the preserve is the red-winged blackbird. Their melodic song is distinctive this time of year during mating season. They can be found doing daring chases at speeds up to 30 miles an hour and feeding on last year's cattails. The females don't get as much attention, but they are pretty and reminiscent of a small sparrow.

Our local birding spot is just 10 minutes from the house. I'm always amazed by what nature's wonders have to offer at Conestee Nature Preserve. Today we rode out on bikes before dawn - at 32 degrees. We were rewarded with front row passes to glorious sunrise views with Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, wood ducks, Canadian geese, mallards, a muscovy duck, red-winged black birds, a beaver, and a red-headed woodpecker. A beautiful morning.

Great Egrets feeding at dawn.
We pedaled our bicycles through the frigid 32 degree air to arrive at the Conestee Nature Preserve West Bay area before sunrise. The marsh was lower than usual so the Egrets were actually feeding close enough to get some photos with our long range lenses.
