Little Mama Possum (Opossum) Grooms A Joey In Pouch | WhatsThatShadow.com

We have two mama opossums with babies in pouch coming to our yard at night.

The previous video was of Big Mama. She has all black ears and is much bigger. Here's that video - you can see big mama's babies better. https://youtu.be/iGnUFchf1w4

This video is of Little Mama. She is much younger with white tips still on the ears and is also much smaller.

This raccoon comes up from the marsh and looks normal. Then we see a HUGE mussel (shell fish) attached to his/her foot. The raccoon will likely lose a toe or two but should ultimately be ok.

There are a lot of raccoons in the yard missing multiple toes and now we know one of the reasons why.

On a side note, we volunteer rescuing raptors and shorebirds with a local avian clinic. I have also witnessed shellfish so big that they can weigh down small herons and egrets. Charleston SC Apr 2026. https://whatsthatshadow.com/raccoon-with-huge-mussel-on-foot/

So excited to finally see a mama opossum with babies (called joeys) visible in her pouch!

She stops by one waterbowl for a long drink and grooms her pouch and a couple babies and then moves over to a different waterbowl where she has a nondescript interaction with a raccoon.

Raccoons and possums generally get along great. There were three possums in the yard last night and two of them had a pouchful of babes.
