Good morning. My name is Ryan Sexson. My wife Jamie is the person who came up with the idea to bring a Veteran in need to our ranch in Nebraska. We were very humbled to see the response to Matt's post on this page. I want to start by giving some back ground as to where this idea came from. Jamie and I have wanted to give back for a long time, financially we have not ever been able too we also live in a rural enough area that volunteering is not really and option. We stepped into a ranch lease a year ago in a complete leap of faith. It has been a tremendous struggle that has blessed us beyond belief. Part of our operation is custom calving cows for a man that I have built a working relationship with. We will be calving quite a number of first calf hfrs this year and decided we should budget to hire someone. We were looking into lots of options, a college intern was something I was giving a great deal of thought. Jamie, asked me one night why we could not hire a Veteran and explained how this could be our opportunity to give back and possibly do some real good for someone. There are a ton of reason's we are going forward with this. The main drive is this. Our country is providing refuge for foreigners and providing aid to foreign countries and we have people right here at home in need. We never understood why nothing was being done for our own, especially our Veterans who have provided our FREEDOM. We felt like this was our chance to put up or shut up. We are not going to just talk about this, it is going to happen. Secondly, I would like to give credit where it is due. My wife Jamie has been the drive behind this idea, she just asked if I could make it happen. Matt, deserves the gold, I reached out to him completely unannounced and an entire cold call. With out him this would have never become a reality. I am so grateful for Matt and his hard work and commitment to his country and fellow Veterans.
I want to give an update on how things are going. Matt got me in touch with a Veteran that is going to come and work with us this spring. There was a tremendous response from Veterans that are interested in coming out. I wish we could bring them all, unfortunately I can not make that happen yet. We have full intentions in starting an organization that will facilitate the introduction between ranchers and other Veterans. Everything is a process and we want to make sure that we have everything ironed so we can avoid as many struggles as possible. We hope to have someone here no later than the first of March. At this time the only thing we are in need of to get him here is a camper. We are struggling to find what we are looking for within our budget, which isn't much. I really want to provide a home for someone not just a place to keep the rain off their head and kind of keep the cold out. If anyone here has suggestions we are open to any ideas. Thank you all and I apologize that this is so long. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions or comments please don't be afraid to comment.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office - WV

This is how I spent my Thursday at my full-time job as an ACO & humane officer, assisting our Sheriff's Department and the Humane Society of the United States with the seizure of 21 pitbulls. They are in the possession of the HSUS and the dog owner is facing 14 felony counts. Hours behind a camera for documentation purposes, time well spent.

****PRESS RELEASE****

At approximately 6 AM today, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance and coordination from the Humane Society of the United States and Jefferson County Animal Control Officers, executed a search warrant at 4190 Bowers Road, Kearneysville, WV for the house, outbuildings and yard. The search warrant was executed without incident.
The warrant was to collect evidence based on a long running undercover investigation that led law enforcement to find the site was used to breed, fight and sell pit bulls. As part of this investigation, an Undercover Agent purchased a pit bull, at that location, knowing the purchaser intended to use the pitbull for dog fighting.
The owner of the property, Steve Jennings, responded to questions and cooperated with Sheriff’s Deputies and Humane Society Staff in identifying the more than 20 dogs on site. Dr. N.L. Wilt, a local veterinarian, examined all the dogs.
More than 60 items of evidence including fighting pit, cell phones, breeding stations, collars, weights, chains, and documents that including pedigree ledgers, were seized along with 21 pitbulls of varying ages and conditions. At least 14 of these were found to have injuries or scars consistent with dog fighting. Now that they have been removed, the dogs will be well cared for in a safe and secure facility where they will be treated for any injuries or illnesses.
Janette Reever, deputy manager of animal fighting response for HSUS said, “The suffering has come to an end for these dogs who have spent their lives tied to heavy chains or fighting for their lives. Dogfighting is a serious crime that harms not only the dogs involved, but also the community at large. We are grateful to the Jefferson County authorities for being so pro-active and dedicated in their efforts to root out this illegal bloodsport.”
Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty, who participated in the search, commended the patience and dedication of all involved. “This effort is the culmination of lots of work by the Humane Society and the Sheriff’s Office. The assistance of all helped to end this cycle of animal cruelty.”
Jennings was charged with 14 felony counts of animal fighting (WV State Code §61-8-19A).
