DC and NoVA's Best Headshot Photographer So many people hate getting professional headshots taken and I understand why.

It can be so uncomfortable, especially if you aren't happy with some of your features or think you don't photograph well. My clients usually relax and feel more comfortable once they see their first image on my screen. I give prepping tips prior to the session, a makeup artist referral, if needed, posing guidance and the ability to see their images during the session. I play music in the background and we just have fun! You are not allowed to leave until we capture an image that you love. I laugh when they say "you made me look so good!"...I snapped what I saw! Watch what happens about twenty minutes in...

My clients call it magic; I say…I capture what I see!

Almost everyone walks into my studio a little stiff and nervous...it’s understandable. Shoulders up, a smile you can tell they’re working at. I don’t make a big deal of it. We just talk through it, and I try to create a relaxing atmosphere with music. I’m pretty witty, so you will be smiling at some point.

Somewhere around twenty minutes in...many times sooner, they forget the camera is there. That’s the energy I’m waiting for, and it’s theirs. Then, I just capture what I see...and it’s amazing!!

My favorite little moment in a session…a client catches themselves in the mirror next to my lights and immediately fixes their collar. That tells me exactly what they’re worried about, and honestly, it makes me smile every time.

I keep that mirror right there on purpose so a quick check is easy. I often tell my clients the only things worth checking are hair (especially fly aways), tie position and jewelry placement. The rest? Ignore it. I’ve got you.

Every October, my phone fills up with some version of the same message.

“I’m speaking at a conference in two weeks. I need a headshot.”

I love these clients. I do. But here’s what I’ve noticed about those sessions: the two weeks aren’t really the problem. It’s that the two weeks made the decision for them, and they walk in carrying that.

There’s a particular kind of tension that comes with a deadline you didn’t choose. They’re not thinking about how they want to show up. They’re thinking about whether this will be done in time.

And “done in time” is a very different session than “finally got this right.”

The clients who book in October for their November event get a good headshot. The clients who booked in July, with nothing bearing down on them, got to actually be in the room with me. They tried the second jacket. We did the review together and changed the angle. They left with something they’re still using two years later.

Conference season is coming. If your name is on a speaker page anywhere between now and spring, this is the nudge.

Here is the one photo I could snag to prove I was actually at our regional conference in Charlotte. 🤷🏾‍♀️

When I say I worked… I WORKED. Probably more than any previous conference. From Wednesday to Saturday, I captured thousands of photos documenting our regional conference.

Unfortunately, I don’t get much chance to fellowship with sorors I rarely see from other areas…I see them in passing and snap a selfie. But it’s a priceless trade-off. I get to meet and interact with sorors across the sorority at every level, and capture some of the most meaningful moments that others don’t get to see. It’s actually amazing.

I did manage to steal some time with a few sorors, lunch, dinner, late-night drinks, and that was so special. That helped me more than they know. ❤️

So while I sit here in my bed at home after editing pics until late last night, body aches galore (forgot to take Tylenol before starting), I’m grateful for the opportunity and the ability to have experiences like this doing what I love.

Now…back to headshots and insurance!

Before you book a headshot photographer, study their work.

Not just one great image.
Look at the overall style.

Do you like the lighting?
The expressions?
The editing?
The way people are posed?
The overall feel?

Make sure their style already matches what you want.

Do not book a photographer expecting them to completely change their look to fit something else you have seen.

That rarely ends well.

The portfolio tells the truth.

Look closely before you book.
