A quick still frame from the Effingham, IL tornado video shortly after touching down and becoming a fully condensed skinny cone. Watching this tornado touchdown and widen into a large truncated cone as it crossed the road behind us was a surreal experience. Full video to come soon.

Still processing yesterday. The day struggled early due to cool low-levels from the morning/afternoon passing MCS. Storms took on classic super cellular structure with strong low level inflow, but it was cool. Wall clouds and inflow tails would form, but it was clear the low level instability just wasn’t there.

After leaving two tornado warned storms we headed West to a storm near Charleston, IL. The plan was to intercept the leading edge and sample the hail, but very quickly it was obvious something was different. The storm was pumping out CG strikes and a hard left edge developed. A delayed midlevel impulse had arrived and it pulled in the rich low level moisture / temps from the south with it. Within no time we were contending with a close range, rain-wrapped, large tornado. After creeping in to the inflow notch and sampling it from the north side, we decided to continue with our original plan of letting storms pass and hopping down the line due to fast storm motions.

The next storm was Effingham, IL. The storm had the classic supercell shape but was still lacking a tight mesocyclone at the hook. We cut south through the precipitation core and got out in front right as a couplet was developing. Shortly after a cone lowering developed, and we quickly repositioned as we assessed we were directly in the path. After a short trek north, the tornado fully condensed and we all witnessed one of the most amazing intercepts of our lives. A close range, strong tornado a couple hundred yards away.
