September is childhood cancer awareness- in hopes to raise awareness and funding for research I’ve decided to share a fact and a spotlight on a child who has had to become stronger than they should’ve needed to.

Sept 15th: A large follow-up study of pediatric cancer survivors found that almost 10% developed a second cancer (most commonly female breast, thyroid, and bone) over the 30-year period after the initial diagnosis.

Ember dx age 2, Wilm’s tumor. Coming up on 6 yrs cancer free.

Sept 14th: Cognitive impairment affects up to one-third of childhood cancer survivors.

William diagnosed at 5 years old Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia high risk, relapsed at age 8 fought for 5 years. He is a 7 year survivor and just started college. 🎗️

Sept 13th: Cancer in children and young adults is different from cancer that develops later in life. Some of the unwanted side effects of cancer treatments cause more harm to children than they do to adults. This is because children's bodies are still growing and developing, so cancer and its treatment are more likely to affect developing organs.

Kody Callison diagnosed at the age of 5. Stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Been cancer free for 14 years!!

Sept 12th: Most new cancer diagnoses in children are for leukemia (28.1%) and brain/CNS cancers (26.5%), while malignant epithelial neoplasms and melanomas (23.3%) and brain/CNS cancers (21.9%) are top cancers for adolescents.

Millie Jo. Diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 3 months old. She’s been out of treatment a year and a half now.

Sept 11th: More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have a significant health related issue by the time they are 45 years of age; these health related issues are side-effects of either the cancer or more commonly, the result of its treatment. 1/3 rd. will suffer severe and chronic side effects; 1/3rd will suffer moderate to severe health problems; and 1/3rd will suffer slight to moderate side effects.

Name-Krosby Age-13 (now) Age Diagnosed- 8 Diagnosis- Osteosarcoma Status- 4.5 years NED. Rotationplasty & hearing aids due to Cancer and treatment.

Sept 10th: Childhood cancer is not one disease - there are more than 12 major types of pediatric cancers and over 100 subtypes.

Courtney diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma stage 3 group 3 when she was almost 4. She is now almost 13 and cancer free.

Sept 9th: As of 2018, 4,317 children and teens under age 20 were diagnosed with CNS tumors, accounting for 25% of total cancer diagnoses in the age group 0-19.

Rowan diagnosed in 2020, 2 months before her 2nd birthday, with high risk hepatoblastoma (liver cancer with metastasis to lungs). Finished treatment November 2021 ♥️.

Sept 8th: In 2018, 17,293 children were diagnosed with cancer in the United States — approximately 47 children per day.

Sept 7th: The average age at diagnosis is 10 overall (ages 0 to 19), 6 years old for children (aged 0 to 14), and 17 years old for adolescents (aged 15 to 19), while adults’ average age for cancer diagnosis is 66.

River Joy diagnosed with hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma at age 8 in Sept 2014.
Faught so bravely through 2 years of treatment. 3 years of mostly cancer free. 1 year of another fight. She graduated to angel at 13 in May 2020.

Sept 5th: The overall incidence of childhood cancer is on the increase, averaging 0.8% increase per year since 1975. Overall cancer incidence rates increased an average of 1% per year from 1997 to 2018.

Anders. AML leukemia diagnosed at 10 weeks old, has been cancer free for 2 years now and is 7 year old survivor.
