Aiming to be inspired often results in photos that are just a joy to look back on. They may not be the photos that are the star of the show, yet they hold a certain unique place in my heart. These photos are sometimes from my own yard, sometimes from a mini session, sometimes from a major event, - regardless, scratching that inspirational itch as a creative is the pièce de résistance.

Oh, to be a kid at the African American Museum of Iowa's Juneteenth celebration!!! Experiencing the power of our community through their eyes is truly amazing, especially at an event like this one. I'm so honored to have been able to participate and feel the joy of everyone who came out to sing, dance, eat beignets, drink lemonade, acknowledge our history, look to our future, and above all, appreciate one another. Events like these are a dream to photograph! Don't forget to support AAMI throughout the year! I'm so grateful we have such an incredible resource right in our backyard!🤩🤩🤩

TW: Death, grief.

Death in American culture is wild. Death is so life-changing, yet American culture pushes concepts of death and grief down, as if we shouldn't experience it. I challenge that.

This weekend, I have a deathiversary that I honor every year. The death of my mother. In so many ways, my mother and I were wildly different people who walked completely opposite paths. However, I learned so much from her. She always seemed so free from life's general expectations, choosing consistently to be whoever she wanted to be and leaving restraints behind. Her unbridled nature confounded the rigid way I saw the world as a child, and since her death, especially, I've found that same nature inspiring. Since her passing, especially, I often seek out opportunities to remove myself from worldly pressures and ask what would bring me true joy, even if it goes against the grain. My primary life goal is to be as genuine as possible and help others do the same, and this goal is in large part inspired by who she was and how she lived.

Grief and joy are interconnected for me. To honor someone, there is sadness, yes, but also immense appreciation for having known them and experienced their life.

May we all allow ourselves opportunities to feel unbridled while being our genuine selves, if even for small moments.
