I have a media background and I've written a few good stories. Whether seascapes or landscapes, marine life or people, my goal is to do more than take a pretty portrait. I don't shoot what it looks like, I shoot what it feels like. I take pictures every day. I research ways to make my pictures better, every day. I took a course in B&W photography and have darkroom experience as required by my coll

ege degree. More recently I completed a semester in Digital Photography & Lightroom Editing at Cuesta Community College to improve my technique, expand my knowledge and perfect my photo-editing skills. I've entered some competitions and won some awards. Right now I'm the administrator and photographer for the San Luis Obispo County Business Improvement District/Visitor Alliance of Cayucos's Facebook and Instagram accounts. On this date 2023, the anchovies in massive swirling balls were chased in a feeding frenzy onto shore. They’re back - have you seen and heard the birds diving all day? Nature is cool.

Sunset surprise at Cayucos Pier! 💫

🌊 Sooty shearwaters visit the Central California coast during summer and early fall, traveling in massive flocks of thousands to feed on anchovies and krill near local landmarks like the Cayucos Pier and Morro Rock.
🌊 Fun fact: These dark brown seabirds fly up to 40,000 miles in a figure-eight pattern from New Zealand and Chile to spend the Northern Hemisphere summer in the Pacific.
🌊 Feeding Frenzies: Shearwaters dive up to 200 feet underwater using their wings to swim after small fish and squid.
🌊 From Shore: When baitfish move close to the shoreline, massive flocks gather right off the Cayucos and Morro Bay coast, often accompanied by pelicans, seagulls and terns we’ve seen here the past few weeks dive-bombing for bait.
Nature is cool!

So Thursday’s dramatic beach scene was actually our local first responders preparing for the unexpected. Emergency agencies teamed up for an intensive surf rescue simulation right in our backyard.

They train together to sync communication, perfect their timing and ensure that when a real emergency hits, they can move as one seamless unit. So grateful for the hard work and dedication of Cal Fire SLO, Morro Bay Harbor Patrol, SLO County Parks Lifeguards, San Luis Ambulance, CHP and CALSTAR. 🌊✨

I haven’t shared but sadly, I never again saw the two Black oystercatcher chicks that hatched July 3 - I’ve been checking at the nesting rock regularly since July 5 - both the chicks and parents were gone. Today on my walk I caught some movement at a nearby rock, and there were the two parents (see first slide)! I will keep tracking.

ChatGPT says July 5 (exactly 48 hours after hatching), the parents likely guided the chicks off the top of that exposed rock down into the highly camouflaged intertidal cracks, low-lying boulder fields or a neighboring pocket beach. They’d be old enough to fly by now, so my hope is they survived and are faring well.

Both parents help raise black Oystercatchers, keeping a watchful eye on predators and feeding the offspring. With a global population of 10,000-12,000, Black oystercatchers are considered rare. They are completely dependent on marine shorelines, favoring sheltered areas above high tidelines that support limpets and mussels, their preferred food. (Source: All About Birds)

Hubs and I had an incredible wildlife-spotting day. The stars of the day were the bald eagles - two youngsters recently fledged from their nest about a mile up the road from where we saw them - mom and dad in flight above a tree where one of the fledging sibs was perched, incessantly calling for them 😆 Neighbors say they’ve seen both sibs, both seem to be doing well.
We also were fortunate to see a herd of non-native Roosevelt elk on the ocean side of Highway 1 north of San Simeon. These are the descendants of the Roosevelt elk brought here by William Randolph Hearst for the castle’s zoo in the early 1900s. Hearst later released them on his ranch property to roam freely.
We also saw lots of deer and two barn owls in a friend’s barn.
Such a great day!

Thanks to my daughter and grands and nephew John, Alicia and Carter Call for going to see the winning art hanging in the Ponderosa Pavilion to let me know how they placed.
