The aspens at Oxbow Bend were tired this year, after a record heat wave in July and then too much moisture in August, they couldn’t find the energy to put on a show. So here’s a photo from a few years back, and here’s to hoping the trees recover well for spectacular foliage season next year.

The fall color in the valley may be fading but October and November can be a beautiful, and more peaceful, time in the valley. Early dustings of snow on the peaks bring new dimension to the mountains and the conclusion of the rut can bring the moose all together in one spot.

It’s not here yet, but it’s coming soon. Winter scenes are their own kind of beautiful. My favorite winter mornings are when the trees are covered in what is called hoar frost, ice crystals that are formed when water v***r turns directly to ice. It creates shimmering, feathery patterns on grass, tree branches, rocks, and windowpanes. It glitters in the light and is absolutely beautiful.

This photo was taken on the kind of morning where the fog was so thick you couldn’t see anything. So the best thing to do is drive around to different areas of the park because one of the cool things about Grand Teton is that fog can come in pockets big and small. One moment you may not be able to see 10 feet in front of you and the next, you’re treated to a spectacular view. I drove around for any view I could find and found an opening in the clouds and fog. I liked the eerie feel so I quick shot this before sunrise out the window of the car on the side of the road. October can be a spooky time in the mountains 👻🦇🕸️

Today I was reminded of a time a couple years ago when I found myself at a campground in Grand Teton on my last morning in the park. I’d stumbled on a cow and calf moose hanging around in the sage brush with no other photographers around, and through the trees came a big bull. I couldn’t believe my luck; it’s often a rarity to have such a scene all to myself. A few minutes after they disappeared to the river a lady walked up to me and told me she’d snapped a photo of me from behind while I photographed them, and asked if she could send it to me. I’m always the one behind the camera, so I was so grateful to have this moment captured to look back on. She never told me her name but I’m thankful she was there to help show me a version of myself I never get to see. Life is funny sometimes - if you’d have told me 10 years ago that photographing nature and wildlife would become a part of my soul, I wouldn’t have believed you. Now that the travel days are behind me, I have had some time to reflect on this season’s travels to Grand Teton.

First, I want to thank everybody who recognized and approached me in the field and said something to me. It meant so much to hear directly from y’all how much you enjoy my work. Reading comments on social media is one thing but it’s another to hear it in person. It truly means the world ♥️

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - when visiting the valley it’s so important to just take it all in. Look for the small moments and details. When I first started photographing, I’d get wound up over weather conditions, foliage conditions, wildlife sitings…you name it. Of course I have my favorite type of conditions and subjects to photograph, but weather and wildlife are two things you just cannot control. I’ve learned to just enjoy being there as the beauty is truly all around you, especially in the fall. I’ve lost count of the amount of trips I’ve taken there and each one really has been different. This year in particular I had many messages before I even arrived saying, “all the leaves are gone!” and “Oxbow Bend is sad,” “the cottonwoods are dull.”

Based on this I really thought it might be a dismal foliage season. I thought I’d get there and see most of the trees in the valley bare, mostly brown, or dull. As many “warning” messages as I received, I also thought ‘Oh well? I’ll try and make the most of it.’ As you can see, the valley really was not lacking for color. While true the aspens at Oxbow Bend decided to drop early this year without really changing at all, the cottonwoods were really some of the most vibrant I’ve ever seen them. The willows and lower foliage were also very colorful. It gave me a chance to shoot something a little different at Oxbow and I’m excited to share the result.

I also had the opportunity to shoot with some brand new gear, and fine tune some of the gear I bought last year. I’m super impressed with my new lens’ performance and it’s made me more excited to visit again in a few weeks. I hope you’ll follow along!
