I’ve been doing a lot of small practice pieces from my library of hundreds of photos I took over the last 15 years. Here is a small piece in recycled pastel paper of Devils Tower in the western Black Hills. I added the clouds to increase drama to a fall scene.

My goal with many of these small studies is to experiment and create ideas for future larger pieces. If anyone is interested in a larger piece from my recent posts, please feel free to let me know. I enjoy all your comments as well.

I’ve been working on small studies lately. I challenged myself to paint every day for 10 days. I had hoped to get one small study a day done, but my old hands didn’t quite hold up. Here are the 7 I managed over 10 days last week. All are in soft pastels on various kinds of surfaces. Each is about 5x7 inches or smaller. Some may be used for prelude to larger paintings. I would love your thoughts on these. All but one are taken from my own photos from journeys through the years.

Back to working with soft pastels and landscapes. The original photo was taken at Cape Argo Beach of the lighthouse at Charleston, Oregon in the spring of 2017. It’s was one of my favorites of the overlook from an AB&B we rented there that early May. A spring storm loomed on the horizon while a profusion of purple flowers bloomed onshore. Done on 9x11 inch sanded paper in soft pastels and pastel pencil.

Another round of Plein air painting today. This time at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, SD. Still need a bit of refining and more practice. But it was a great morning. The highlight was watching an osprey snag a fish out of the water in front of me!
