Story time: I grew up in a family that was fairly entrenched in the dance world. My mom worked for a flamenco company for a long time while my brother was training to be a professional dancer. My sister was quite a talented tap dancer and I was, well, horse-obsessed. So, I ended up knowing quite a bit about dance and the world of dance and was only slightly ok at it. So when I left for college and became ever more horse obsessed, I figured my dance days were over.

And then my daughter, fondly referred to online as Thing 2, came along. She started dancing when she was two and hasn’t stopped since (and I definitely have to plug the fabulous for being a truly lovely and nurturing studio). She began her foray into pointe this year and was super excited to hop in on her brother’s photos an take some first-year-on-pointe photos. We need to practice a bit more with dance photography (both of us), but she amazes me every day (and I have to admit that I’m happy to be back on the sidelines of the dance world).

“Mom, can I get you to take some photos of me” is something a photographer’s child almost never says. Almost.
So, imagine my delight when my high schooler asked me to photograph him!. He had some very specific ideas of what he wanted, and we discussed style, I came up with some ideas with him, and then we ran with it.
He was looking for some dramatic-ish photos of him playing music. He’s an incredibly talented musician, both on the guitar (which he’s been playing for eleven years) and as a newcomer to the cello (this is his second year). I seriously cannot get over how amazingly close he is to being a fully-fledged adult, and staging and working on these photos with him has been an absolute joy.

This family. They’re absolutely the most beautiful family, inside and out. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know them for the past few years, but especially this year as they’ve held my hand while I’ve started my own foray into Western Dressage. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to photograph them and their beautiful horses. Aren’t they just amazing?

Can I just take a minute and thank Sam from The Inspired Equestrian for my absolutely gorgeous logo? She was absolutely wonderful to work with and came up with something perfect and so what I envisioned for this business. And of course, the animals in the logo are inspired by two of my own. She also makes absolutely gorgeous and useful equestrian journals. I use one for my boy and it's fantastic!

Did you know, as much as I love horses, I also adore photographing our other, smaller four legged beasts. When I’m preparing for small(er) pet portraits, I find it so much fun to get creative while considering the personality of both the dog/cat/other beast and the human(s) who loves them along with the relationship between them. I’m happy to work with you on your vision, or, if you’re not sure what your vision is, help you figure that out. Either way, there’s no end to what we can come up with!

Ok, ok, sometimes a neigh is deafening. Especially when you’re holding your horse and it’s a full throated neigh right in your ear (seriously, do horses *try* to deafen their people?), but there’s nothing quite like working in a quiet barn with the sound of the occasional horse talking to each other and nicker of the horses in the barn as they wait for their food. Is there ever a better sense of calm than that?
