I have been trying for years to capture Willow's true eye color in the sun, and today was the day! They are actually a rich, golden brown when you look closely. From a distance, they look black! Today was incredibly warm, so I spent the afternoon watching her enjoy some enrichment time outside of her mew.

Willow is a Barred owl, and educational ambassador at Blue Hills Trailside Museum. She is imprinted and non-releasable back into the wild. She lives life with the important purpose of helping us to educate people of all ages about the role of Barred owls and our native wildlife in Massachusetts. You have most likely heard a Barred owl in your lifetime. It sounds a lot like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all!"

The Blue Hills Trailside Museum is a natural history museum that features indoor and outdoor exhibits of non-releasable native wildlife, providing education about the natural world of Massachusetts. Great Blue Hill reaches a height of 635 feet which scenic views, the highest of the 22 hills in the Blue Hills chain within 125 miles of trails, starting right outside the Museum doors. Missing my bird friends at Blue Hills Trailside Museum today while I'm home for recovery. Even one week away from them is too long! Here are photos I took with Scarlett after animal care last week πŸ₯Ήβ™₯️ she is my favorite girl! I don't know that the love is reciprocated, but she ks certainly nicer to me these days compared to how she was when I was a new person in her life. So grateful for all the incredible animal encounters that come with being an animal care volunteer at Trailside!

Scarlett's "injury" is that she is imprinted on people and was not a good candidate for release as a young hawk. This is the most common "injury" for our program birds. Scarlett and Amelia our broad winged hawk seem to enjoy it!

My very first unboxing video for my nature enthusiast and artist friend Shapes In Nature! πŸΊπŸ•·πŸ¦…πŸ†πŸπŸͺ³πŸ¦

Jesse creates amazing wildlife art dedicated to the portable and abundance of wildlife biodiversity our planet holds. He is my go-to big expert, he can literally identify any bug big or small that I send him, with cool little facts about them!

These nature pins are beautiful, and I love every item of Shapes In Nature clothing I own - but these little card decks are so cool! The rarity level of the cards is based on the conservation status of the animals; the more endangered the animals, the more rare the card is, including holograms! You may even get a signature series card, signed by Jesse! πŸ’š

So grateful for our long distance friendship, and being able to connect with like-minded nature lovers from coast to coast. If 9 year old me knew I'd have a bug expert pen pal, life would have been so much happier. I was bullied for being different, having an interest in bugs and frogs, finding a deeper connection with nature than I did with humans. Thanks for being awesome, Shapes In Nature!!

My now 14 year animal journey episode with Lea Whitaker ( on Instagram) link below! It's long and I'm passionately rambling, I also say "like" every 10 seconds - but it all has meaning!

We talk about wolves, snakes, alligators, birds of prey, politics in wildlife, controversies in the animal world - both captive and wild, Scales, Feathers & Fur, public outreach and education, and life!

Snow day sunset with the one and only Amelia! She is a broad winged hawk, and an educational ambassador at Blue Hills Trailside Museum!

Amelia was rescued as a baby and raised by hand. The family claimed they didn't know this was both a very challenging task and illegal. By the time Amelia was brought to a licensed rehabilitation facility, she was already very imprinted. This means she thinks she is a human and has no fear of us, making her non-releasable back into the wild. She is now an educational ambassador for her species at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum.

If you think a bird (or any wildlife) needs help, call your local wildlife rehabilitation facitly and get professional advice before interfering! There is an available list of private wildlife rehabilitators and facilities on MA on the government website. You can also try calling the Environment Police for help.
