October 1991 | Oakland Hills Firestorm

35 years ago today, a devastating firestorm swept through the Oakland Hills, claiming 25 lives and destroying thousands of homes. It became one of the most destructive urban wildfires in California history.

Several weeks later, I entered the burn area while working on another photographic series exploring remembrance and loss. I encountered a landscape transformed by destruction and absence, where entire neighborhoods had been reduced to foundations and ash.

At the time, I struggled with whether it was appropriate to photograph such profound loss. The negatives remained untouched for more than three decades.

On this 35th anniversary, I am sharing these photographs as documentary records of what remained, bearing witness to a community forever changed.

I’m so honored to have been selected to participate in “Edge of the Pacific: Bay Perspectives” which is an exhibit that explores our local waters in the San Francisco Bay and surrounding coastline.
The exhibit was curated by Jan Watten (Gray Loft Gallery) and Nick Winkworth (Bay Area Photographers Collective) and is part of the “Ocean Photographer of the Year” exhibition at the Alameda Navel Air Station in the historic World War II Hangar 41, 650 West Tower venue, at Alameda Point!

Sharing the space, the Sailing Science Center presents hands-on marine science exhibits where visitors can engage directly with ocean processes such as tides, wave formation, and the impacts of marine plastics—deepening understanding through play, inquiry, and discovery.
