Legacy Sessions
When I first started photography as a hobby years ago, I quickly realized that some of my favorite photos were the ones that told a story—photos that held meaning far beyond the image itself.
One of these photos is of my granddaughter, Ada. She was named after my great-grandmother, Ada, and the table featured in the photo belonged to her. I can still remember exactly where that table sat in her home. Seeing my granddaughter beside something that belonged to the woman whose name she carries makes this photo incredibly special to me.
Another photo is of my grandson, Abel John, who was named after his Poppy. In the photo, Abel is wearing Poppy’s hat—the same hat he almost always wore to church. I can still picture him wearing it whenever he dressed up. Seeing that hat on Abel is such a sweet reminder of the man whose name and memory he carries with him.
The last photo is of my niece, “Rubi,” who was named after my grandmother, Ruby. She is wearing her grandmother’s wedding ring, and we chose a 1960s-inspired look to represent that era. My Memmy was a classy lady who dearly loved her grandchildren, and I wanted this photo to reflect a little piece of who she was.
These photographs mean so much more to me than simply capturing a beautiful moment. They connect generations. They preserve pieces of the people we love—their names, their belongings, their stories, and the memories they left behind.
I cherish these photographs and the wonderful memories they bring back of our loved ones who have passed on. That is one of the things I love most about photography: a photograph can preserve a moment, but it can also carry a legacy.
