One of the hardest lessons I had to learn as a photographer was figuring out when a photo was “finished”. I know Ansel Adams would take a photo knowing exactly how the final product would turn out. I had to develop that frame of mind as much as I had to develop my own style. This here is a “finished” photo. But I didn’t take it with this outcome in mind.

This is the photo after the masking, the cropping, the tilting, basic adjustments, color mix, tone curve, grain, and effects.

And here it is… A brief, fleeting, raw (and RAW) moment. No idea of how it would eventually turn out. An encounter with transient action. Flat horizon. But a moment full of potential.

But it also looks kinda cool in black and white as well!

Before the fine masking. Because sometimes the eyes need to be told where to focus.

Before the crop and the tilt. Because perspective really does change everything.

This is Merlin.

All the boys around here call him Old-man Merlin.

He’s one of my new best friends.

Merlin is indeed old and stubborn, but he likes attention.

He will not let me pass without offering up some snout rubs.

And now you too must oblige Merlin his customary snout rubs.

The gentlemen cometh…

I’ve been sleeping on these photos a bit too long. Would you believe me if I told you these were taken in the middle of Glacier. Just a couple of gentle hooligans. Up in the mountains. In our Sunday best. Because why not?

I think it’s a safe thing to assume that everyone has wanted to be a cowboy at one point or another. And if you didn’t, then I think it’s time you stop lying to yourself.

Of all of the stories I remember from growing up (I’m still growing up), cowboys were always the best, or at least my favorite heroes. Their mythologies were always the ones of which I wanted to see myself a part. The sweeping landscapes, the horse chases, the shootouts, and old-world romance always thrilled me. But it was the characters of the cowboys themselves that drew me in.

They weren’t “flashy” or “pretty” types of heroes. They were far from perfect. They were rough and chiseled, beaten down by the world, typically 80% wh***ey. But in spite of all of their flaws, they were virtuous, humble, always aimed to put a smile on your face. They were real.

They taught that even the most calloused hands can have a gentle touch. That the eyes of the toughest gaze can still produce tears. And that no matter how much the journey or the earth may wear you down, it never hurts more to do right.

Earlier this year, I visited New York City for the first time. I don’t know what took me so long to get to the Big Apple, but it became one of my favorite experiences of the year. I’m not a city person, and yet it’s one of the most incredible places I’ve ever stood in.

What surprised me most was the pride this city has for NYPD and FDNY. It’s everywhere; the patches in shop windows, the way people talk about them, the quiet reverence for the ones who ran into the fray.

A quarter century is a long time. But I still remember.

I was seven on September 11, 2001. Young, but attentive. A little like Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, adolescent in mind but trying to make sense of a world that had suddenly stopped making sense.

Exploring and experiencing New York this year, that simple story got a lot bigger. It’s no longer just a headline and horrifying images from my childhood. It’s a real skyline, real streets, real people who took the worst day in their city’s history and rebuilt something even more alive on top of it.

I know there’s a lot to think about on a day like today. Things to never forget. I’m just thinking about New York.

I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been a bucket list item to shoot an album cover in my career. So consider me grateful to Pink Halo for the shot. Also consider me thrilled that the song that’s been in my head all summer is finally available! Go give “Je Ne Sais Quoi” a listen and get excited for the full album dropping on October 1st.

Special big thanks to Kyle Gregory Michael Nally and Kyle Havlicek | Stay Gold Visuals for letting me be a part of this great shoot.

I used to think I didn’t have the head for hats. My dad used to actually say, “Winders men do not have the head for hats.” I don’t know if he was serious or joking, but I’ve been hung up on it and used to never wear hats. Even though I thought they were the absolute coolest.

I wanted to wear a cowboy hat even though people told me I wasn’t a cowboy. But truly living the journey is part defying expectation and part deciding for yourself what to be and being true to that. It’s saying, “I don’t think I really have a head for hats, but I want to wear a hat, so I’m going to wear a hat.”

Now I’ve become the person in most groups that “wears the hats” and it makes me happy. If the hat fits, wear it. If it doesn’t fit, wear it anyway. If you don’t think you have a head for hats, stop lying to yourself and just wear the dang hat!

And I’m incredibly grateful to Serratelli Hat Company for the coolest hat I’ve ever owned… and it has my name on it!

I’m no cowboy. I’m not entirely sure I have it in me to become one. And I’m still trying to figure out whether that’s a blessing or a curse whenever I try to shoot rodeos. At the very least, I hold a heck ton of respect for all of the cowboys and cowgirls; the ropers, riders, wranglers, and all those that have the bravery to chase eight seconds. That respect, I suppose, is what commands my eyes.

Who else has been listening to Dolly nonstop the past couple of days?

Which of her 5,000 songs is your favorite? Mine’s “White Limousine”.
