Once part of Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, this land carries a history that stretches back to the 1800s. You can’t help but wonder what life looked like here generations ago, when vaqueros and cattle shaped the Santa Ynez Valley.

In this interview, Old Spanish Training Company shares the story behind the Santa Barbara Cheek — inspired by an original bit by A. Martinez and handcrafted by Jesus Mardueño.

An example of the traditions of the California vaquero, this is more than a piece of tack — it’s a living artifact of the craftsmanship, history, and horsemanship that came before us.

These bits and spurs are crafted by The Old Spanish Trading Company using historic patterns inspired by the pieces of an earlier generation, keeping old craftsmanship, tradition, and the spirit of the American West alive.
It was fitting to use this old cactus, on a historic mission, from an era where the original patterns might have been created.

Out of necessity, out of inspiration, in a time where craftsmanship wasn’t rushed, but celebrated.

*Silver Mounted California style spurs

Sterling silver inlaid California style spurs with intricate sterling inlay and filing. These spurs have heel chains and are made in white iron that will develop a beautiful patina with use. An original design by the Old Spanish Trading Company and marked OST.

*GS Garcia pattern Silver Concho bit
When a bit is not just a bit, it’s a work of art.
This one is inspired by a very old traditional California pattern by GS Garcia. Each cheek piece has a large 3.25” sterling silver concho done with pretty single point engraving.
Shown in the rust brown finish on the iron to give the bit an overall aged and classic look. The mouthpiece is a 5 1/8” wide half breed with a cricket. An exclusive design by The Old Spanish Trading Company.

*Silver inlaid circle cheek cowhorse bit

Sterling silver inlaid bridle bit by The Old Spanish Trading Company. The mouthpiece is a 5 1/8” wide sweet iron desueñado mouthpiece with a copper cricket. The desueñado is a great cowhorse mouthpiece that most horses will absolutely love.

A Santa Barbara cheek bit based on one of the oldest and most classic early 1900s California patterns by Juan Estrada.
