It’s not often you get to step into a place this remote and witness a cowboy still living by the rhythms of the land, water, and seasons. The stories are everywhere if you take the time to look.

We visited an ancient cave with Chumash paintings, a place long said to hold healing energy, and stopped at a rock where Native families once ground their food, the circular marks still visible in the rock.

On the way back, we had to hike 1/2 mile and check a water trough , clean the pump at the spring, and even came across a deceased bear, probably shot by hunter.

It’s when the stories stop being shared that history disappears.

Walking R Ranch, Cuyama, CA with cowboy and poet Dick Gibford.
Today, Dick shared some of the history of this land and the people who once called it home. The rugged hills and canyons of Cuyama served as a refuge for Chumash families who sought to escape Spanish control and the mission system. Hidden among these remote landscapes, they found places to live, raise their children, and preserve their way of life.

Walking these ranch lands with someone who knows their stories is a reminder that every landscape holds layers of history far older than our own. Grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the people who came before us and the enduring connection between land, culture, and community.
