Because it had been 20 years since I’d gotten to see MCR live, when the opening chords to I’m Not Okay started, I was shocked at how immediately I started sobbing, and didn’t stop for the whole song. It’s arguably one of the happiest-sounding, most affirming and community-building songs in their catalog, and it’s one of those perfect pop masterpieces that sounds like it should have already existed before it did — like, where did this come from? It sounds simpler than it is, like it must have arrived fully formed in a flash of genius. Built around this explosive, campy, sincere declaration that you can be fu**ed up and alienated and not even know why and still belong somewhere.
I was 17 when I first saw them live and it was a blur of giant agro dudes in the pit in a suburban club. Then 20 years pass and suddenly I’m standing there hearing those opening chords in a stadium with tens of thousands of people. Belonging right here.
The rest of this B stage set was honestly a bit of a blur for me; I was still shocked, even after all of A stage, that they were right there. I hope these photos reflect some of the magic I felt. I keep learning more new things with every batch I edit, honestly I’m so inspired that I can’t stop experimenting and getting weird with it and I have this glorious band of mad genius weirdos to thank for that. Here at last comes the end of my shots from NYC. Onto MPLS, then LA (where I’ll finally be on Frank’s side!!), then whatever comes next. To the death!
