This name translates to "big water" in their Athabaskan language, distinguishing it from the smaller creeks in the rugged terrain surrounding Bridgeville. While the Wiyot name Gidughurralilh is often cited for the lower reaches, To-cho-be specifically refers to the river as it flows through the ancestral heartland of the Nongatl.
