Around 300–350 polar bears live in the Svalbard region.
Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt seals, their primary food source.

They can swim for many hours and travel long distances between ice floes.

Due to melting sea ice caused by climate change, their habitat is shrinking, making survival more difficult.

Here In Svalbard, special precautions are required when you leave the town limits, as polar bears may be encountered almost anywhere at anytime.

The Svalbard reindeer is a small, stocky subspecies of reindeer found only in the Svalbard Archipelago.

It has thick fur, short legs, and a compact body that help it survive the extreme Arctic climate. Unlike many other reindeer, Svalbard reindeer do not make long migrations.

They feed on mosses, lichens, grasses, and other low-growing plants during the short Arctic summer and dig through snow to find food in winter.

Their unique adaptations allow them to thrive in one of the world’s northernmost inhabited regions.

The Arctic Tern is a remarkable seabird best known for making the longest migration of any animal on Earth.

Each year, it travels from its breeding grounds in the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again, covering roughly 50,000–70,000 km on average, with some individuals traveling even farther.

One of its most fascinating traits is that, by migrating between the Arctic and Antarctic every year, it experiences more daylight than any other animal, effectively enjoying two summers annually.

What a privilege it was to witness Arctic terns resting on the ice and performing their aerial dances from such a close perspective.
So small yet, so powerful and resilient.

Approaching Longyearbyen in Svalbard.

Everything here feels new to me. Even though I’ve spent time around ice before, this is the first time I’ve witnessed something on this scale, the immense ice fields, their endless textures, the 24-hour daylight, the temperatures, the wildlife, the sounds.

There is a greatness to this place that is difficult to put into words.

I feel deeply grateful to experience it, and profoundly humbled by it.
