Suzi Altman Photojournalist/ Witness in Mississippi

Suzi Altman Photojournalist/ Witness in Mississippi I am a photographer and film maker from New York City living and working in the deep South, specifically Mississippi for over 25 years

I am A New Yorker, - living and working in the deep south, specifically Mississippi for over 20 years. My work focuses on race, civil rights the South and everyday life. I see photos and I choose to focus my camera on the under represented in society, to shed light on those who have not been heard traditionally. To give a voice and platform to those who need it most. I started my career in New Y

ork City at The Associated Press, after an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine and another internship with acclaimed photographer Mary Ellen Mark over thirty years ago . In addition I have photographed the Mississippi Delta for over 20 years including the rich cultural heritage, the civil rights history, the deep religious roots and the music and the musicians it has produced. I have also been an event photographer for over 30 years. My camera has been my ticket to explore the world. Photography allows me to focus on making the world a better place by using my camera as a tool to illustrate the issues I am passionate about. I have a special gift that allows me to connect with my subjects quickly and make them feel comfortable in any situation. I also blend well in public or in a board room or a movie set and this allows me to make candid, natural photos without disrupting the event. Some of my work is in the Permanent Collection at The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) Washington,DC. and also in the Permanent Collection at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

Today June 3rd 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the Meredith Walk Against Fear. Meredith kicked off his walk from the Peabody Hotel in Memphis and was shot on the second day of the walk. Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael and others came to Memphis to continue his mission and walk to the Mississippi State capitol. Over 8000 blacks registered to vote and 15000 people peacefully walked into downtown Jackson MS. It is one of the last and largest civil rights demonstrations. Pictured is James Meredith walking in the 50th anniversary walk in Memphis outside the Lorraine Hotel and the civil rights museum. I have had the honor of documenting James Meredith for over a decade and have a vast archive of film, video and voice recordings. Photo copyright ©️

June 3rd would be the 60th anniversary of the James Meredith Walk Against Fear, Meredith was shot on the second day of his walk. I have had the honor to walk with James on his 50th anniversary and many other occasions and to document and photograph James Meredith for close to a decade amassing over 100,000 images and thousands of hours of video. This year it is even more important to remember his sacrifices and honor James Meredith by voting. Pictured is Civil Rights icon James Meredith, 83,wearing white shirt, pants and a hat, on right, walks from the Smith Robertson museum in downtown Jackson MS. to the State Capitol to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of his historic Walk Against Fear in 1966. Meredith was shot on the second day of his walk in 1966 in Hernando MS and Dr. Martin Luther King and other major civil rights leaders of the time continued Meredith’s March from Memphis to Jackson which ended at he Mississippi State Capitol on June 26, 1966 with 15,000 marchers. The Meredith March was the largest civil rights march ever in the state of Mississippi. The Smith Robertson Museum has an exhibit all about Meredith’s March called “Am I or Am I Not A Citizen.” and Meredith spoke and signed books at the museum before the walk to the state capitol. Is big a big day playing in the dirt, moving dirt and dumping river dirt in the garden area to make good soil and to make it safe. We cleaned out all the debris and anything that would not biodegrade and are now working on making the entrance from the street safer, less steep better angel for entry——and stay tuned for more …thank you to All our supporters and all who keep encouraging us to continue our hard work. photo copyright ©️

Safety concerns played a major issue in making the major decision to dismantle half of Rev. Dennis’s Sinners Tower on the far end of Margaret’s Grocery art environment. It was originally constructed in the early 1980’s and the wood and plastic were no longer viable, safe or structural sound. So after careful consideration and we lovingly dismantled it section by section, just like he built it. We are keep everything we removed, as Preacher would say don’t throw nothing out it all has value. We will reuse what we can and repurpose some rotten would to make art from to honor Margaret and Rev Dennis. Weather has been an issue and the rain has delayed our work, but once it stops raining and dries out we’re planning on being back out here doing the hard work to save this iconic site. Photo.
