Javohn Garbutt – a perpetually happy and energetic 8-year-old – is the youngest son of legendary Belize fishing guide Thomas “Scully” Garbutt of Punta Gorda, Belize. When Javohn recently started feeling sick with a headache and low energy, his parents Scully and Doret drove him from their home in southern Belize to the hospital in Belize City. On June 25, Javohn was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Scully, his wife Doret, and their son Javohn are currently in Denver, where Javohn is currently receiving emergency treatment at Children’s Hospital Colorado. He is scheduled for brain surgery this week. A group of Scully’s friends have stepped up to the plate to make this possible – flying the Garbutt’s to Denver, arranging things with the hospital, and personally guaranteeing the $180,000.00 bill for treatment.
As non-US citizens, the hospital has of course asked for full payment up front, and this is a massive amount of money for Scully’s family to cover! As such, we are calling on our friends, our valued clients, and all who have fished with Scully or his brothers in Belize to consider helping the family during this difficult time. We have known Scully for more than 20 years, and aside from being a legendary fishing guide, he is one of the finest human beings we know. He is kind, beyond generous, and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. Over his many years of guiding in southern Belize, he has touched the lives of thousands of anglers. Scully is a full-time fishing guide, and Doret is an elementary school teacher. They are both taking time off of work to care for Javohn and the rest of their family, and it is likely that they will have to be in Denver for several weeks.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up, allowing us to show our support for Javonh Garbutt and his family. The Garbutts are an extraordinary family, with an incredibly caring spirit. They contribute so much to their community and for close to 20 years have made guests and visitors feel like they are part of the family. It is our hope that we can rally around them now, in their moment of need. It is amazing that his friends have been able to arrange this treatment for Javonh in the United States, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family as Javohn undergoes his procedures in the days ahead.
