Acacia trees dot the Tanzanian savanna in several varieties and in some areas grow in dense pockets. But I love when I can spot one all by its lonesome.
These trees have a chemical warning system that activate when they are browsed by herbivores like giraffes. Acacias release toxic tannins into their leaves to make them unpalatable and emit ethylene gas. Neighboring trees receive this gas signal over 150 feet away and bump up their own tannin levels within 15 minutes. Cooperative intelligence.

Elephants live in tight, female-led groups that share deep emotional and generational bonds. The oldest and largest female, the matriarch, leads the herd. She remembers water and food sources as well as safe passage zones. Female African elephants can indeed grow tusks, although not as thick and prominent as males.

The Serval holds the record for the longest legs and largest ears relative to their body size for all cats. Their incredible vertical leap of up to 10 feet allows them to knock down flying birds. They also boast a nearly 50% hunting success rate, which is double that of lions, making them one of the most efficient predators in the entire animal kingdom. And a single serval can consume around 4,000 rodents a year….quite the Exterminator! Move over Orkin and Terminex…this cat’s takin’ over.

Black and White: Zebras in the Serengeti use their black-and-white stripes as a natural air conditioner, where the temperature difference between the fur colors creates tiny air currents to cool their bodies. Additionally, the high contrast stripe pattern confuses and repels biting insects like tstese flies that swarm the plains.
And get this, when running together in a group-called a “dazzle”- their overlapping stripes create an optical illusion that makes it hard for predators like lions to single out one target.
Incredible adaptation from such a simple thing as fur.

Intertidal Gleaning. Early in the morning on the northern coast of Zanzibar when the tide is at its lowest during the summer sunrises, women wade through shallow waters of the ocean where it is only a foot deep for hundreds of yards. The disappearing tide exposes the much of the reef and sandbars allowing them to pick shellfish and mollusks to use for their meals or to sell at local markets.

There’s something really special about looking a wild animal in the eyes, out in their domain, in their space, on their terms.
I’m only a guest feeling blessed to observe the strength and beauty of nature, which must always be respected.

Dhows are traditional wooden sailing vessels with long, thin hulls and triangular lateen sails that have been in use for thousands of years to navigate the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf. I took this sunrise photo off the eastern coast of Zanzibar, Africa in the Indian Ocean. 🌊

Cheetahs: The hyper-car of the animal kingdom. And why not? These animals are really built like sports cars. They accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. They have claws that dig into the ground like cleated tire tread, unlike the claws of other large predator cats. Their paws are like thick, rigid tire rubber allowing them to make sharp, high-speed turns. And their tail is like a specialized steering wheel, long and muscular, allowing them to use it correct balance and weight distribution through hard turns while chasing down prey. Impressive traits. I shared an intimate stare with this one deep in the Serengeti.

Mt. Wilson. Widely ranked as one of the toughest expert level 14ers in Colorado. Located in the San Juans of southern Colorado, this peak is featured as the iconic Coors b**r logo. It’s a great location to capture Fall colors!
