Two Brothers. Deep in the Serengeti I saw two lions at a distance begin to approach each other. At first, I thought a territorial fight might ensue between these two huge males and I could feel my tension build as I held my camera. But as the gap between them closed with no visible signs of aggression I realized these two knew each other. Then my guide confirmed they were indeed brothers of the same pride. When these two finally came face to face they rubbed the sides of their heads against each other in a warm greeting and remained in the tall grass around them, scanning the grasslands. What a sight to see….

The fierce gaze of a stalking Lappet-faced vulture is one of the most intense you will see in nature. Its intimidating presence makes it the undisputed king of African scavengers. This one here was closing in on a Zebra carcass as if nothing was going to get in its way. Eyes as black as night and the unshakeable confidence to match. They possess one of the strongest beaks in the world allowing them to tear through tough hides and thick tendons other animals cannot pe*****te.

Emuratare…..I met this young man, who was 17 years old and was part of a Maasai tribe near the Serengeti. He was undergoing a vital traditional circumcision, and a rite of passage known as Emuratare, which marks his official transition from a boy into a Maasai warrior. Boys typically aged between 10 and 20 prepare through various tests of endurance. The circumcision ceremony is performed without modern medicine or anesthesia. Initiates must not flinch or show signs of pain during the ceremony to uphold personal and family honor. The healing process takes a number of months during which time they must pass through a seclusion state and wear black clothing instead of the traditional bright red garments associated with the Maasai people. The clothing serves as a distinct social identifier of his transitionary state. He will learn the tribal traditions and how to live in the bush before becoming a protector or his people.
The white face paint is normally of geometric patterns made with local white clay. This symbolizes purity and a new beginning of his family’s lineage.
He graciously allowed me to take his portrait after I humbly asked for his permission. It was an interaction I’ll forever be grateful for.

EleFam. Several elephant families were traveling across the southern Serengeti when I captured this one straggling behind with their little one. Majestic and docile all at once, these highly intelligent animals wandered close to me for a while at the end of the day.

Maroon Bells. Long exposure on a windy sunrise to smooth out the rippled water. 4 second exposure with a neutral density filter and high f stop. I really like how the shadowy landscape frames The Bells and the wind streaks in the water create subtle leading lines. Definitely a unique shot of an iconic mountain peak. Shot on R5.
