For most people, changing a drinking cup is a small inconvenience. For Ben Carter from Devon, England, it was much more than that.

Ben, who has severe autism and is non-speaking, had used the same blue two-handled Tommee Tippee cup since he was a toddler. It was the only cup he trusted, and he refused to drink from any other.

The cup had been discontinued years earlier. As his last replacement became worn out, his family tried introducing different cups, but Ben refused them. He became so dehydrated that he was hospitalized twice.

In 2016, Ben’s father, Marc Carter, shared their story on social media through the campaign. The appeal quickly went viral, prompting people around the world to search their homes for the discontinued cup and send any they found to the family.

The story eventually reached Tommee Tippee. After locating the original mould at a factory in China, the company produced 500 identical blue cups to ensure Ben would have access to the cup he trusted for years to come.

Ben’s story highlighted an important reality: autistic people can have highly individual sensory needs, and understanding and accommodating those needs can make a profound difference in their lives.

“Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.”
— Immanuel Kant

This single idea is one of the most influential principles in moral philosophy.

Kant challenges us to ask a simple but profound question before every decision:

“What if everyone acted the way I am about to act?”

If the answer leads to a society built on honesty, fairness, and respect, then the action is morally right. If it creates a world where trust, justice, or responsibility collapse, then the action is morally wrong.

This principle reminds us that ethics is not about convenience or personal benefit. It is about choosing actions that could become a universal standard for humanity.

Whether in business, leadership, relationships, or everyday life, integrity begins with acting according to principles we would want everyone else to follow.

True character is revealed not by what we can get away with, but by the standards we choose to live by.

Most people believe happiness comes from gaining more pleasure and avoiding pain. Yet history’s greatest philosophers taught the opposite. The pursuit of pleasure without discipline can make us weak, while the fear of pain can make us prisoners of our own minds.

Marcus Aurelius understood that both pleasure and pain are temporary visitors. Neither should be allowed to rule our thoughts, decisions, or character. When we become attached to pleasure, we lose self-control. When we become consumed by pain, we lose our peace. In both cases, we surrender our freedom.

True strength is not found in comfort. It is found in maintaining balance when life tests us. It is remaining humble when success arrives and remaining steadfast when hardship appears. A strong soul does not depend on external circumstances for its value.

Every challenge carries a lesson. Every victory carries a responsibility. The person who learns from both becomes wiser, calmer, and stronger with time.

Do not let pleasure distract you from your purpose. Do not let pain convince you to give up. Master your mind, and you will master your life.

“The human soul degrades itself when it is overpowered by pleasure or pain.”

— Marcus Aurelius
