Late last March we got the call that the bioluminescent algae had resurfaced on the shores of San Diego. That first night was a spring tide, when high tide is at its peak in the lunar cycle, and we made our way to the sand to splash in the sparkling waves and watch our footprints glow beneath a starlit sky. ✨

All at once, streaks of silver danced below us and we looked closer to discover that grunions (silverfish) had made their way up on the beach to spawn! Thousands of females had made their way up the beach to dig themselves into the sand and lay their eggs, followed shortly thereafter by the males to curve around the bodies of the females and fertilize the eggs. This dance of life only lasts a couple of hours before the grunions retreat to the sea. How lucky were we?!

I can’t quite explain how special this moment felt to me then. Amidst a global pandemic, in those tenuous moments of despair, it gave me a glimmer of understanding in that the cycle of life and death is something that encompasses us all. And it’s raw and messy and ultimately miraculous. I still travel back to this moment where the awe and childlike joy of the pure utter fact of life was just at arms reach.

Do visit early in the day to bathe in the healing waters of the rock pools and take in the expansive views
