McCall feels wrapped in a winter pause as I look toward Mill Park and Payette Lake. 💙❄️ The air is sharp and clean, as the lake holds every shade of blue, pale sky, deep water, and soft reflections that seem to slow time itself. Early in the year, before the Winter Carnival Festival fills the streets, the town rests, quiet and thoughtful.
It feels as though the lake is remembering back to 1924, when McCall answered winter’s long stretch with Payette Lakes Sports Carnival. I imagine dog races cutting across snow, snowshoes biting into ice, skiers flying, and even a motor sleigh racing over the frozen lake, powered by an airplane motor and fearless joy. Those days gave way to ski hills, organized sports, and later the Ice Break-Up Contest, where everyone waited and guessed for spring’s first crack.
This year the lake hasn’t frozen over, yet its calm blue surface seems to hold every season at once. In the stillness, history feels close, quietly shaping the winter spirit that still draws people here.
