Snake River Southern Idaho
Under Idaho Skies
I discovered this barn along the Snake River in southern Idaho during a scouting trip earlier this year. Its weathered red exterior stood out against the muted tones of the canyon landscape, framed by sweeping cliffs and the open desert sky. I immediately marked the location and planned to return during the next new moon, hoping to capture the Milky Way stretching above the canyon.
When the night finally arrived, conditions were far from ideal. Winds in the canyon reached 40?60 mph, with intermittent clouds and high haze moving through the area. The perspective I sought required the galactic core to appear low and horizontal above the canyon. Given the extreme wind and changing conditions, I chose to create this image as a carefully planned composite in order to capture the scene as I had envisioned it.
The foreground was photographed at blue hour near the barn, preserving the natural color and detail of the landscape before darkness fully set in. Later that night, when the clouds briefly opened, I moved to higher ground above the canyon where conditions were calmer and captured a tracked and stacked image of the Milky Way. Both scenes were photographed with my Nikon Z8 and later aligned in post-processing using reference compositions from PhotoPills to maintain realistic scale and positioning of the night sky.
The foreground is a single 30-second exposure at 54mm, f/8, ISO 64. The sky consists of 40 tracked exposures captured at 16mm, 90 seconds each, at f/2.8 and ISO 800 using a Nomad tracker. Processing included calibration and stacking in PixInsight to reduce noise and enhance detail, followed by final blending and finishing work in Photoshop. While the image is a composite, I wanted the final result to remain natural, believable, and true to the vision I had for this location.
