We had teeny tiny baby hummingbirds in our Japanese maple the summer before we left California, in the most delicate, petite nest. We watched them grow day by day for a couple of weeks, until they were big enough to fly away. What an extraordinary thing to observe, to share with our small children. Afterward, anytime a hummingbird graced our yard (which was often), we wondered: is it one of our babies?

Here’s to noticing the extraordinary, in all its forms.

P.S. hi, I’m back. I missed it here. Hope we get to make something extraordinary together, soon.

3 year old Thiago doesn’t yet speak English — his native languages are Spanish and Portuguese. When I first learned this I was nervous as to how I might engage him during our session.

Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. He radiates joy. He ADORES his parents. Amidst all the snuggles, if he got distracted by sticks or leaves (great! even better!), all I had to say was “hola, lente!” (hello, lens!) and he would repeat it in his sweet little voice and flash the most exuberant smile in my direction.

At the end of the evening, Thiago ran up and hugged me. I feel the same, little guy; I feel the same. You are just the sweetest.

I love fall on the east coast—the crunch crunch crunch of the leaves, the vibrancy of the colors, the brisk air. But some mornings I wake up aching for California. Today was one of those days. What a trip to think we lived in this stunning place for even a second of our lives.

Just sitting here musing over the notion that we can be so happy in one place, all the while missing another so hard…a bittersweet coexistence of emotions. Sometimes life is so beautiful it hurts.

Love that point in the evening when wiggles turn into snuggles and the sun meets our gaze low on the horizon. I can just feel the exhale here. Another beautiful autumn session in the books. 🍁

Helloooooo from Maryland! I’ve been quiet all summer as we unpacked and saw family and I played interior designer — but I’m thrilled to say we’re settled, we’re happy, and this little biz is up and running again, just in time for fall portraits. 🍁

WE’RE COMING HOME.

I’m prepping for another travel day, but this time, it’s not for work. Our whole family is crossing the country to Maryland next weekend to see our NEW HOME and the soon-to-be new location of Chantal Lavine Photography! 🥂 🏡 🥂

The last couple of months have been a blur of redeye flights and bidding escalations and home improvements, and the next several will entail project management of a whole new variety for me as we renovate pieces of our charming, 1950 home. It’s hard to believe we’re about to embark on *another* cross country move, but goodness, does it feel reassuring to be moving toward our family and the tribe we left behind four years ago.

As with any big move, it is bittersweet. We’ve grown to love the Bay Area and despite having been here during the throes of an isolating pandemic, we’ve built some really beautiful relationships here. Those goodbyes will be incredibly difficult for all of us. Chosen family is so important, and we certainly have some chosen ones here. You know who you are.

All of this is to say: we’re feeling all the emotions, and we’re grateful for all of them. (I’m already teary-eyed with every other interaction.) So please bear with us over the coming days and weeks as we work through each feeling and prepare our littles for another big life change.

And to my amazing clients who have stayed with me through distance and pandemic, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can’t wait to come back to you. 🤍

(PS — apparently I collect .co camera bags now. How gorgeous is this??!)

HIBERNATION.

I’ve discovered it’s something I do, but it seems especially pronounced this year. I’ve been in winter pace / stunned by world news / deep think / house hunting / planning mode over here and it’s meant very little head space to engage on this platform in a way that feels meaningful rather than performative and so I just…haven’t.

I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW. What resonates with you? How can I show up here to better serve you? Beyond a feed full of pretty images, what content do I create that you find engaging?

Think on it, pretty please, and drop a thought below. Also, hi. It’s been a while. 😘

I hope you made the space to love on yourself today.

Whether that meant snuggling your babies extra close…

Or whispering sweet nothings to your love…

Or soaking in a long, hot bath in the silence…

Or devouring a whole box of chocolates on the sofa by yourself.

You do you, love. Love on you. Every day of the year. Because goodness knows, you deserve it.

How did you dote on yourself today? Drop a comment below to let me know. 💗
